“The Zone” radio station responds to VibrantVictoria.ca’s concerns over “on location” vehicle idling

Victoria’s “The Zone” radio station’s official vehicle, a yellow SUV complete with speakers attached to the roof, was recently spotted downtown “on location” for a radio segment.  No big deal there, as the Zone’s “Rangers,” as the crew refers to themselves, are routinely zipping around town promoting events and businesses.  However, while the SUV was stopped, it’s engine wasn’t.  For quite a while.  The reason being was that in order for the speakers to operate the engine would need to run.  Given the anti-idling sentiment in this town, I inquired with Sara P, The Zone’s program director, about the idling issue.  Shortly thereafter, a post on the discussion forum brought the issue to light.

About a day later, Sara P made a statement on the discussion forum, saying, “This has been an issue we’ve been trying to resolve since getting the new stereo in the Zone Xterra a few months ago. Trust me, it’s been bugging me since we got it.”  She further added, “We will no longer be doing this…if we need to run the roof speakers for an extended period of time we will occasionally start the vehicle to boost the battery.”

Kudos to the Zone’s crew for catching the online discussion and reacting so quickly!  Members of the forum who followed the original thread were also appreciative for the quick response and the station’s decision to change it’s position on idling the Zone SUV.

Yes she is moving up, Baro. Although Edmonton is a frosty city in winter, it's major market. And if you're a career driven media personality, it's a step up.

I don't see why a city nearly three times the size of Victoria wouldn't be a step up, although in terms of climate, it's definitely a sub-zero decline ;)

Tee hee, I'm so funny :)

Since I was raised in a media family I can attest to the fact that, if you are young, single and have no family or financial ties to Victoria, Edmonton is most assuredly a step up, particularly if "Career" is your primary concern.

Victoria is a small market by comparison. Particularly if your goal is to get to TO or Vancouver then you move whenever and wherever the opportunity presents itself. I have no idea who Sarah P is - I don't listen to the Zone - however assuming she has no spouse/kids/mortgage tying her to Victoria, and if I am her, I go without a second thought.

Any idea how the Zone's hockey play-by-play gig is working out?

I gotta say tuning in to a rock station to hear hockey coverage when you're expecting to hear music is ...weird.

They are in a ratings period right now, so they should have an idea in a few months, but don't know how detailed information they will release to the general public.
