Canadian soccer superstar leads charge in Saturday game

She is regarded as Canada’s best-known international soccer star, and she’s joining her professional team in Victoria for their last regular-season game of the 2010 campaign.

23-year-old Kara Lang and the Vancouver Whitecaps women’s squad will play their arch-rival Seattle Sounders on Saturday afternoon (July 17) at Royal Athletic Park.  The match marks the first time since the team’s formation in 2003 that the “W-league” team will play on Vancouver Island.

“Not many of our Island fans can make it over to the Mainland to see a game, so we thought we’d take our game to the fans. We’re looking for ways to grow the women’s game, and Victoria presents a good opportunity to do just that,” said team spokesperson Roberto Cabrone from his Vancouver office.  And given the right conditions, he adds, the team will most certainly be willing to host more games outside of Vancouver.

The Whitecaps have amassed an impressive 6-0 record with three draws this season against teams hailing from places like California and Colorado. With this Saturday’s game representing the team’s last regular-season match-off, the Whitecaps will attempt to make it a near-perfect campaign.

Canadians, and Victorians in particular, will remember Lang from her three appearances here in 2003 as a 16-year-old as she played a prominent role on the Canadian national team during World Cup qualifiers held in Victoria. If the thousands of female soccer players in this city, or indeed this country, need any inspiration, Kara Lang can fit that bill. She was just 15 when she scored her first international goal (a world record), and she was rated the #1 North American player when she was recruited by UCLA of the NCAA in 2005.

Millions of Canadians watched her lead the Canadian team at the Olympics in 2008, where the national side lost a heart-breaker in extra time of the quarterfinals, to eventual champions USA.

The Saturday kick-off is set for 4:30pm at Royal Athletic Park. Tickets are available at the door, priced from $9.

Quote: Skyscraper Source Media takes allegations of plagiarism seriously.

WTF?!?! I think you better look up plagiarism because facts cannot be plagiarized and this article contained all the same facts as every other media outlet as provided by the Whitecaps.

I had no idea articles on the front page of this site were being done by paid professionals. I assumed it was a volunteer of some kind who is part of this "community" who got their facts either from the T-C article or the Whitecaps media release. I doubt that a reporter from Skyscraper Source Media independently researched and conducted interviews for the article in question but if that is the case I will be happy to apologize.

The author did indeed conduct a telephone interview and e-mail followup with the Whitecaps spokesperson named and quoted in the article. Then other facts were put together using a FIFA website and information from the Canadian Soccer Association.

The author is also pleased to inform you that he also attended the game, and took the time to speak with Highlanders GM Drew Finerty while there too. ;)

If that is the case then I apologize for any suggestion that the author was the typical sports reporter and look forward to some insightful reportage of our local soccer team as they look to finish the season.

I think an article about the possible move of the Highlanders to USL2 or even the NASL and how that relates to a possible move to Royal Athletic Park would go down quite nicely after shilling for the foreigners. :D
