“601 Herald” mixed-use project breaks ground in Chinatown

Chinatown’s latest mixed-use residential and commercial project broke ground this afternoon at 601 Herald Street.

Vancouver-based Airey Group purchased the old Victoria Brake Ltd. property several years ago with plans to develop a project that fit in with the neighbourhood and elicited a sense of historic charm.

“We initially set out with a design that emulated nearby historic buildings, although since the initial proposal was aired we’ve modernized design elements to acheive a more modern, yet fitting, look,” said Robert Cadez of Airey Group.

Cadez says the four-storey-plus-mezzanine project, dubbed 601 Herald, has already attracted a mix of first-time buyers and individuals looking to downsize.  Approximately one-third of the residential units have been sold and residents are expected to move into their new digs by the summer or early fall of 2011.

Bespoke Design, a local interior design and furniture company currently occupying a commercial space in Market Square, has already committed to 1,600 square feet on the groundfloor.

Bespoke Design co-owner Heather Draper said the decision to move into 601 Herald and be situated in the epicenter of what is considered Victoria’s “design district” was an easy choice.

“The location is perfect for us and the design of the space itself is gorgeous,” Draper said.

Project construction manager Durwest Construction expects to move forward with concrete pours upon completion of excavation with construction expected to be completed in about one year.

My experience tells me that most people would have figured that out.

601 Herald, I purchased one of these units, completion letters have gone out, closing is just around the corner, eager to hear views from others that have bought already and share my own thoughts.

When do you get to move in? I've seen all of their show suites - really like the 2 bedroom on the corner.

Closing is now next week, we where scheduled to take possession sooner but they (developer) had some.... unforeseen hick up. Still the excitement builds. I understand the development is 60% sold, it will be interesting to see the mix of owners, full time residents, 2nd homes, rentals. Have you heard of a group on line, I know many of the condos have Google groups or face book pages? When we where thinking of buying I looked for the chatter about it on line from other potential buyers and interested party but didn't find much, other than this site.

I had a look though that corner unit as well, great position, lots of light.
