Volunteers have delivered 5,000 counter-petitions to City Hall as part of a campaign by the JohnsonStreetBridge.org group to compel Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin and council to hold a public referendum over the borrowing of $42-million to replace the Johnson Street Bridge.

“The official petitions were handed over to Legislative Services, inside the Mayor’s office at 1pm.,” writes the JohnsonStreetBridge.org (JSB.org) website, whose organizers were instrumental in providing information to residents over the course of the bridge replacement/refurbishment process and in leading the charge throughout the counter-petition period.

There is no word yet on how many counter-petitions in total have been received at City Hall.  JSB.org’s website went on to state that “The official counter-petition still requires another 1343 signatures to force City Council to reconsider the borrowing of $42 Million to replace the Blue Bridge, or call a referendum. This is a full community effort – with 13 days to go, and the Christmas and New Year holidays intervening, it is important those who wish to sign get their forms into the campaign office, or City Hall.”
