If $42-million borrowing counter-petition succeeds, taxes will pay for bridge replacement: mayor

Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin made a surprise statement at a special council meeting on whether or not to hold a public referendum on the borrowing of $42-million to pay for the Johnson Street Bridge replacement.  At the meeting, Mayor Fortin stated that even if a counter-petition against the borrowing succeeds, the City of Victoria will raise taxes for two years in order to pay for the replacement of the Johnson Street Bridge.

A video recording of the mayor’s statement was released this evening on Youtube by an administrator of JohnsonStreetBridge.org, a citizen-operated website with a goal of making the City accountable for its decisions over the Johnson Street Bridge’s future.  The video appears to suggest that the mayor is not interested in stopping the replacement project even if tax payers are in opposition.
