Online discussion inclusion in council documents a first for City Hall

VVThe Johnson Street Bridge renovation/replacement project has been one of the most debated issues on VibrantVictoria.ca’s discussion forum.  Since April of this year, four discussion threads dedicated to the bridge have been viewed over 35,000 times and contain in excess of 1,500 posts (responses) from Victoria residents.  Due to the popularity of the discussions and the varied responses from residents, Katie Josephson, Director of Communications with the City of Victoria, approached VibrantVictoria.ca, owned and operated by Victoria’s Skyscraper Source Media, to obtain reproduction rights for inclusion of the discussions  in council’s Johnson Street Bridge community feedback documents.

VibrantVictoria.ca delivered the documents on September 23rd in time for council’s September 24th meeting, thus marking the first instance of a third-party online discussion being included in a formal informational package to council.  “The opportunity to add to the democratic process in this capacity is wonderful,” said Dylan Leblanc, partner, Skyscraper Source Media.  “Residents have come together to discuss the Johnson Street Bridge issue on VibrantVictoria.ca’s forum and for City Hall to officially recognize this asset shows how online, user-driven media can add value to traditional feedback methods,” Leblanc added.
