Parking rates increase at City-owned parkades

Starting July 01, the City of Victoria increased parking rates at its five parkades.

Rates were previously set at $1.00 for the first 59 minutes, with $1.00 increments every 30 minutes for a maximum daily charge of $12.00.  Today that daily charge will cost $13.50.

Although the first 59 minutes of parking remains at $1.00, rates have increased approximately 25-cents for every 30-minute block.

The complete parking fee structure is reprinted below (numbers in parenthesis represent the old rates):

  • 1 hour – $1.00
  • 1 hour to 1½ hours – $2.25 ($2)
  • 1½ hours to 2 hours – $3.25 ($3)
  • 2 hours to 2½ hours – $4.50 ($4)
  • 2½ hours to 3 hours – $5.50 ($5)
  • 3 hours to 3½ hours – $6.75 ($6)
  • 3½ hours to 4 hours – $7.75 ($7)
  • 4 hours to 4½ hours – $9 ($8)
  • 4½ hours to 5 hours – $10 ($9)
  • 5 hours to 5½ hours – $11.25 ($10)
  • 5½ hours to 6 hours – $12.25 ($11)
  • over 6 hours $13.50 ($12)

The City’s one-hour-free parking cards are still available and discount the parking rate by $1.  Cards are available at select retailers, including banks, and can be used at any of the City’s parkades in the 500-block of Yates Street, 600-block of Fisgard Street, and the 700-blocks of Broughton, Johnson and View streets.

^I was talking with someone yesterday who feared she had just accidently paid for the adjoining space.

Perhaps it would be easier to replace the numbering system with something more memorable. Like the names of prominent Victorians. No one would forget or mix up plugging Helen Hughes or Duncan Morrison.

He he. I still find lots of people walking back and placing their tickets on dash. Silly humans.

^When I tell people they don't have to put the ticket on the dash the reaction I get is either gratitude or "what scam is this con man trying to pull?"

Yeah when I've told people that, pointed out the huge signs at the machines saying you don't have to do that, and pointed out all the other cars without tickets on their dash I often get "What ever, I don't want to risk a ticket I'm going to be safe"

Then they complain that parking meters were so much better because you didn't have to walk back and forth a bunch of times.

I just leave my ticket in the machine.
