Uptown openings continue

Electronics superstore Best Buy celebrates its grand opening in the new Uptown development this weekend.

The newest retailer to open its doors in the redeveloped Saanich shopping plaza follows on the heels of neighbours Walmart, Future Shop and Shoppers Drug Mart. The Uptown Walmart Superstore–the chain’s 100th Superstore–opened last week. Walmart officials claim the redesigned store layout was inspired by extensive customer feedback and will offer an improved shopping experience.

The Uptown Best Buy–the region’s second outlet– had its “soft opening” last week. This weekend’s festivities include electronics giveaways and chances to win free $1000 Best Buy gift cards on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The chain will also donate $5,000 to Victoria Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Shoppers Drug Mart and consumer electronics retailer Future Shop had their Uptown grand openings in June.

Walmart opened in the former Town & Country Shopping Plaza in 1994, taking over the old Woolco Department Store site on Douglas Street before relocating this year a few metres away on Saanich Road.

Best Buy Canada and Future Shop are a division of Minnesota-based multinational corporation Best Buy Co. Inc.

Uptown is being developed by Ontario-based real estate company Morguard Investments.
