Work on Victoria’s tallest building begins

Excavators and drilling machines have arrived signaling the start of construction activity for what will become the City of Victoria’s tallest building. James Bay’s 1960’s-era 22-storey Orchard House tower has held the title for over 40 years.
The 177 unit, 21-storey Promontory condo tower, phase II of the Bayview Project in Vic West, will stand some 66 meters above the neigbhourhood and become a new beacon for the central core of the south Island.
Construction should take approximately two years with completion anticipated in early 2014. To-date 77 units, or roughly 44% of available homes, have sold according to sales representative Peter Gaby.
In an odd twist of fate project partner Bosa Properties nixed Victoria in the mid 1990’s over a tumulteous rezoning process for it’s first and at the time only Victoria condo project, The Manhattan (on Yates Street across from The Market on Yates). After vowing never to return to the City, some 15 years later the company has found itself partnering with Bayview Properties to build Victoria’s tallest tower.
The official groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Monday, January 30th, to celebrate the start of construction. A groundbreaking planned for January 18th was canceled due to inclement weather.

Kind of a tossup at the Promontory, the shower upgrade is very nice (tiled tray, etc.) and improves the look of the bathroom substantially. The units with one bath are 430 sq/ft to 791 sq/ft so no one with kids will be looking at them. Men prefer showers over tubs so a shower unit would probably be more appealing to a single guy versus a bathtub on average, and yes on average I agree with you that women would probably prefer a bathtub.

May 21, 2012 at 3:34 pmI suppose that's a good way to look at it. I want to turn one of my tubs into a shower, preferably the master but if I sell it, the master is more likely to be the one expected to have a tub.
I still think the promontory kitchen needs some work. They've gone high end dishwasher, they should have picked one with a front panel to match the cabinets. I wonder how much to upgrade the cabinets to full extension/soft close drawers? And that oven... where do I beigin.
I like the promontory, if they'd sell me a bare unit and let me build my own kitchen and bathroom it would be a tempting move.

- For my experience the visual esthetics of the master ensuite are probably more important than functionality. I think a nice shower would go further in your ensuite than you spare bathroom.
- A dishwasher with a front panel is extremely rare, I've only ever really seen it once in real life. All the doors/drawers are soft close. Overall, if you go to all the developments the quality of the Promontory kitchen is pretty high. Also note that the pictures I posted represent the small kitchen found in the small floor plans. They have a full size kitchen including a 90 cm stove for those floorplans that are over 800 sq/ft.

They're using Miele dishwashers, even their 18" line has a model with custom front panel. It was about the same price for me to get the wood front as it was to get the Stainless front from Miele

Sorry, I didn't realize they were doing soft close hardware in the cabinetry. I stand corrected :)
