Apparently the Victoria Airport Authority has launched a master plan process that will provide a 20-year vision for the airport and its services. Of note is a potential extension of the runway(s) and increase terminal facilities to accomodate larger aircraft.

The runway would be extended towards Pay Bay and not the highway, I think.

I have heard rumors of a highrise hotel too.

Why would anyone want to spend a night beside the Tarmak? Crazy people that don't wanna sleep I guess.

The developer had his ducks in a row but couldn't close the deal in time so ontractors and silent investors became impatient and walked out.

Also, a casino was part of the original plan. With the gaming commision balking at more licenses in the CRD, that plan fell through.

HOWEVER, the latest incarnation of the project is a retail village with a residential component. It's on the backburner, though.

That is an option but Sidney's residential developments would be too close for regulations -- or so I was told.

Sometimes I think they should tack on a full fledged shopping mall to the existing airport. There's plenty of real estate to do it, and the peninsula doesn't have a mall so people would love it.

Problem is, the parking would have to be free for it to work.

Through July passenger traffic at the airport has increased 5% over 2005's traffic through July, and July's air traffic was up over 7% from last year.

do they ever use the airgates at the terminal, i cam from vancouver on a A-319 which is a decent size jet and we stopped and climbed down the ladder.

PS this same aircraft brought me to vancouver from san francisco soo its not like its a tiny tiny tiny plane

The airlines have to pay to use the jetways. So maybe they are trying to save money. I know Air Canada uses them on their TO flights. Or at least they did.

I've used jetways here. Just depends on whether or not they're absolutely necessary. It could be that another jet was flying in that was already booked for one of the jetways (we only have a couple, no?).

nah i was just surprized to see such a large plane from vancouver to victoria. although it was fairly full it was still odd as the all the other times i've done this rounte(27x) i have always had a smaller jet and never used the jet ways

I spent a night at the Radisson Airport hotel in Vancouver. Very very nice, and it was quiet too.

There's not much activity at YYJ after 2100 or so. I'd bet it would be a good sleep.

I guess if there is a business case for a Hotel next to Costco than there could easily be one at the Airport. The bonus would be that anything over the second floor would have ocean views!
