Waste Management / Hartland Landfill

Anyway, I was out for a walk this morning and noticed a couple guys and a tractor with a digger doing something with one of the cans. At first I thought they were digging them up or something. Turns out they needed the tractor to lift out the garbage bags out of the cans and load them onto a flatbed truck. As I watched them pull up the bag, the digger attached to chains, I realized that the bag was actually deeper than the can. It just kept coming and coming. The bag was roughly ten feet high full of trash! Needless to say I guess these cans have a deep hole that continues to hold the big bag about 6 feet underground.
The capacity of one of these bags must be immense. They probably don't need changing any more often than every month, if not longer.
No wonder they stink something awful.

I don't see much garbage. Do they bury it or something?
Anyone know when the tours are? I've been meaning to check the place out.

As the Hartland Landfill gets ever more full each day, Saanich council is preparing to look at a new recycling centre in Glanford that would help divert waste and material from being trashed.

Why not re-open the Borden street location for recycling drop-off?
This was to be a private operation by Ellice Recycling.

Cooked food scraps, bones, dirty napkins etc.
I certainly hope they have rat proof closings.

So do the residents who already recycle vegetable waste into rotted compost for their garden, now have to pay an addition fee/tax to have it hauled away, even if they continue to keep it for their vegetable plot?
I'm sure there will be a fine for not putting it out for pickup. We can't have you getting away with free compost, you know.

Easier, less smelly and no rats...
I concur, there is nothing that goes in mine that also might not be found in my liquid waste stream from my bathroom. So it all goes to the same place. Well, apple seeds and banana skins I guess.

Same ending, just processed a bit differently
I haven't tried any bones in mine, but I suspect it isn't designed for that.
