Operation to offer benefits, fair pay to employees
Louise Dickson, Times Colonist
Published: Friday, July 25, 2008
Two Victoria women are one step closer to opening a co-operative brothel in the city, a share of whose profits would help fund programs for addicted and impoverished sex trade workers.
Last year, Jody Paterson, former executive director of Prostitutes Empowerment Education and Resource Society, and Lauren Casey, a former sex-trade worker and a past director of PEERS, announced their intention to open a brothel that would offer employees all the benefits of a modern workplace including wages, medical leave, vacation pay and workers' compensation.
Last month, they opened what they are calling "an escort agency with a difference."
"This is the beginning," said Paterson. "We don't have an indoor venue yet. What we have is a group of independent workers with a centralized administrator centre."
In her weekly column published today in the Times Colonist, Paterson says her aim is to develop a fair and benevolent workplace for adult sex workers. The goal of the new escort agency -- Victoria Independent Providers -- is to donate a share of profits to services and support for disadvantaged sex trade workers on city streets.
Moving past the social issues and concentrating purely on the business has been fascinating, said Paterson.
"How does it work? And who are the customers? And what do the customers worry about? What do the workers worry about? It's a world you never get a chance to see if you're living in the mainstream world," said Paterson. "We're trying to be different. How do you run it so it's a really good place to work and yet makes money?"
V.I.P., like other escort agencies in Victoria, is legal and has a business licence. All the women are licensed under the city's escort laws. But the business is still developing its policies based on the real challenges of the people involved, said Paterson.
"We're trying to be a fair employer and as legit as the laws allow us to be. We're trying to be a good, discreet, clean and safe business."
V.I.P. has weekly staff meetings to discuss different issues such as income tax or sexually transmitted diseases. The escorts range in age from 22 to 30.
The new agency doesn't want to bring anyone into the sex industry who wants in for the wrong reasons, said Paterson. "We hope to have adult people who are fully certain they want to work in this industry."
Paterson doesn't own the agency, but is on the board of directors. She describes her role as an advisory one. "I'm just trying to help out where I can," she said.
The next challenge is to find investors who can contribute about $40,000 to rent commercial space and buy furniture to set up the brothel.
"But I don't have any expectations," said Paterson. "I want to test the model. I would like to see if we can actually create a better workplace within current laws right now, rather than have to wait 100 years to change the laws. And I'm starting to see, yes we can."

I'm not sure if this is the right forum but sex trade is an urban issue, so I figure I got this right...I nearly choked on my coffee when I was reading this...

I think I just came up with a new use for the Janion Building
The Janion Brothel
"A Brothel Making the difference
I can see it now, it'll be right out of those seedy movies of a bygone era, Theme rooms, women walking around in Garter's and other related clothing or lack thereof - I think this is a step in the right direction, return Victoria to its glory of the Gold Rush era!

"As per usual, I went Downtown To-day to do my Drinking and Whoring. I ventured to my favourite district, the area bounded by Government, Chatham and Store Streets, well North of the Harbour, as the concentration of Saloons and Bordellos to be the finest North of 'Frisco.
Alas, I was unawares that a Canadian-Pacific Steam-ship from the Yukon had arrived at Victoria Harbour only hours before and had Rudely disgorged its cargo of desperate Yankee Gold-Miners--many of which had never laid eyes on a Fair Maiden in years--into our fine city. They made haste to the above mentioned district and had their Vulgar ways with the Independent Women-folk of the Brothelry. Indeed, by the time I arrived there was only one Wench left standing, an old Whore of 23, her Petticoats encrusted with the Evidence of the afternoon's Business. However, she was relatively fresh, as she swore she had bathed just a fort-night ago. I, being in no position to Dicker or Barter agreed to her price of Five Dollars, donned a fresh lamb-intestine Prophylactic and proceeded to Ravish her roundly and with great Vigour. Huzzah!"

"Grand! I'd wager the bellowing of your Climax echoed off the very walls of the Union Club itself!
Your posting got me pondering. When the aforemention Yankee Gold-Miners reach the age of Retirement and take to a life of Leisure, surely they could be encouraged to return to Victoria to spend their Greenbacks. Being too old for Whore-mongering (and encumbered by Wife and mewling babe) a gimmick must be concocted to convince them to return for Touristic Purposes. I propose to construct a False History of this City--one that would make us Appear to be an outpost of Great Britain. Half-Timbered buildings and cottages in the Old-Country Manner can be constructed and Police-men and Carriage drivers appropriately Costumed as to Appeal to those both Sentimental and Gullible."

So that explains the shaking bushes in Beacon Hill.
Know it all.

I think it would only be right of me to donate the use of my living room for this endeavor.

For a small fee, right?
Understand that I was being facetious in my earlier post. I applaud JP's dedication to this mission. Her courage is inspiring.

In a city known for high tea, seniors, gardens, and perhaps most epitomized by the expression – the newly wed and the nearly dead, there is another lesser known, but equally thriving element to the coastal city of Victoria – the sex trade. In a debut film by director April Butler-Parry and written by Gillian Hrankowski, The Brothel Project explores Victoria’s best-kept secret via a new 52-minute documentary.
The Brothel Project follows journalist and activist Jody Paterson and University of Victoria researcher, activist and former sex worker Lauren Casey as they set out to challenge mainstream thinking, debunk stereotypes, and open the first ever legal co-op brothel, operated by sex workers for sex workers in Victoria, British Columbia.
Currently, there are estimated to be four underground brothels operating in the quaint Vancouver Island city, under the guise of massage parlours or escort agencies, with almost 1000 independent escorts licensed with the city who work as indoor sex workers. In Canada, the act of prostitution itself is not illegal, but everything surrounding it is.
The Brothel Project recently made its debut at the Victoria Film Festival to a packed house and excellent audience reception. The Victoria Film Festival has added a second show on February 6th, 2010 at 4pm at the Capital 6 Cinema in Victoria, BC.

New prostitution laws came in yesterday including a ban on 3rd-party ads. Some are unclear on what that means.
Does Monday still have escort ads?

PEERS Victoria, an organization run by and for sex workers, educates service providers in the city on how to reduce the stigma surrounding sex workers and advocate for them. One of the main aspects of its two-woman Violence Prevention Support Team is running the Bad Date Sheet, a way for sex workers to anonymously report anything from a creepy feeling to acts of violence and help keep others safe.
They estimate there are anywhere between 2,000 to 3,500 sex workers in the city and say only about 20 per cent of them are outside workers with the remaining 80 per cent working within escort agencies, massage parlours or doing cam-work and phone sex.
