OLYMPIC RELAY TORCH COMING TO VICTORIA?
Nov 20, 2008

COULD THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY KICK OFF IN OUR CITY?

THE GREATER VICTORIA SPIRIT COMMITTEE IS PREPARING TO FIND OUT WHETHER VICTORIA WILL BE THE FIRST STOP FOR THE TORCH.

A NEWS CONFERENCE HAS BEEN CALLED FOR TOMORROW MORNING WHERE THE VANCOUVER OLYMPIC ORGANIZING COMMITTEE IS EXPECTED TO ANNOUNCE DETAILS OF THE RELAY.

THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF 'SPORTHOST' VICTORIA HUGH MCDONALD SAYS THE TORCH WILL LIKELY COME TO VICTORIA, BUT IF IT STARTS HERE, IT'S A BIG DEAL. "THE EYES OF THE WORLD WILL BE ON VICTORIA. WE SAW HOW PROMINENT THE TORCH RELAY WAS IN 1988 WHEN IT CAME ACROSS THE COUNTRY. IN THAT INSTANCE IT STARTED OUT ON THE EAST COAST."

OUTGOING MAYOR ALAN LOWE, WHO IS ALSO THE CHAIR OF VICTORIA'S SPIRIT OF BC COMMITTEE WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE, AS WELL AS SEVERAL OLYMPIC ATHLETES WHO CALL VICTORIA HOME.

THE TORCH WILL BE FLOWN IN FROM GREECE AND TRAVEL FROM COMMUNITY TO COMMUNITY ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

Any time the Olympic torch relays through a town, it can be both a highlight of civic pride, and, like moths to a flame, attract a great deal of disruption.

By 2010, will we be over the current economic crisis? Will homeless in Victoria be better served? Unfortunately, projecting into next year - I see a torch run through Victoria, and other local municipalities, as more a political football for all sorts of groups, rather than a moment of positive history.

yup, the torch relay will start in Victoria, and then go on the longest trans-national torch relay in Olympic history (& the most roundabout trip from Victoria to Vancouver ever :P):

While it may seem out-of-the ordinary to start the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay on the west coast of Canada, when you hear about the reason and meaning behind it, it makes perfect sense and will help make an extraordinary relay!

The modern-day Olympic Torch Relay is derived from ceremonies once part of the ancient Games of Olympia, Greece. Heralds were summoned to travel throughout Greece to announce the Games of Olympia, declaring a sacred truce for the duration of the celebration. In addition, the heralds issued an invitation to come celebrate and participate in the competition and festivities.

And that is the goal of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. Some will travel to Vancouver to participate in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Others will follow the Games on television, through the internet or the media. Many will travel to Vancouver and Whistler as spectators to cheer the athletes on to victory. As it winds its way through Canada, the Olympic Flame serves as an opportunity for Canadians across the country to participate in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. In fact, more than 90 per cent of Canadians will be within a one-hour drive of the relay.

Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is the starting point for the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. While the city is only about 70 kilometres from Vancouver, the site of the Opening Ceremony for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the torch relay will be taking the long way (45,000 kilometres long way) around the country to include as many Canadian communities as possible as we connect the path of northern lights.

Wow, they are actually going to start the torch in Victoria. We are honored and surprised. Strange that the BC government and the Olympic committee actually know we exist?

I can feel the tears build up (notice the sarcasim).

Here's the new website.

http://victoriaspirit.ca/

So the torch arrives here October 30th in the morning at the Harbour (it's made in China of course, so it's coming across the ocean*).

Then it whips around the city before coming back downtown in the evening for a little fanfare and fireworks. Steve Nash said today he has agreed to be one of the runners, no word if he'll do that here or elsewhere.

DAY ONE - October 30: Following a morning arrival ceremony in downtown Victoria, the Olympic Torch Relay will travel through Victoria, Esquimalt, View Royal, Sidney, North Saanich, Central Saanich, Saanich and Oak Bay, returning to Victoria for the evening Celebration.

DAY TWO - October 31: The torch will visit Sooke, Metchosin, Colwood and Langford before heading up Island for a noon celebration in Duncan and evening event in Nanaimo.

Briony Penn?

That's it. She rode topless on horseback, then ran for the Liberal seat vs. Lunn.

Julien West was running for the NDP in the same election when he dropped out because of naked horseplay he engaged in. :)

Remember, if you post any information in this thread, you can expect a visit from VANOC cops. Have extra coffee and biscuits available.

MODs, can you just rename this thread to the "2010 Torch Relay - October 30th" or something.

Games foes to rally as torch relay kicks off

By Sandra McCulloch and Katie DeRosa, Times Colonist
September 23, 2009 2:02 AM

Opponents of the 2010 Olympics hope to divert media attention away from the torch relay, set to begin in Victoria on Oct. 30, with a huge gathering at Centennial Square celebrating "charter freedoms."

"It's not a protest," said Zoe Blunt, spokeswoman for the "No 2010 Victoria" initiative, set to take place from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. as the Olympic torch begins its journey through the city.

"We'll celebrate the right to use public space, the right to free assembly, the right to free speech and free association" guaranteed in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The event organizers promises to have clowns, a five-ring circus, shopping cart races and "poverty games," such as street hockey.

Centennial Square has not been approved by the city for Olympic protests, but Blunt said optional locations have been declined. "We said no thanks, we'd rather use this lovely square that we built with our own money for the public -- hello!" Blunt said.

Victoria police will monitor this event and any others that pop up.

"We're on the world stage here," said police spokesman Sgt. Grant Hamilton. "So there's a lot of things we have to think about when we talk about security issues."

Police and organizers are keeping the route for the torch relay under wraps for now, because of security concerns.

Victoria police have been planning their security strategy for months and are drafting an operational plan for the event, which they expect to attract between 50,000 and 100,000 people downtown, said Hamilton.

Almost every Victoria police officer will work that weekend, Hamilton said, and will be backed up by officers from surrounding municipal detachments, RCMP and military personnel.

Blunt said the group is undaunted. There is plenty of anti-Olympic sentiment in the community, she said.

The relay falls on Halloween weekend, the second busiest time for police after Canada Day.

The demand on police resources during the torch relay will be 10 times the magnitude of Canada Day, Hamilton said.

Unruly protesters will not be tolerated, he said.

"They're almost setting the stage that they want something to happen," he said.

Someone forgot to tell this guy to keep it quiet:

TORCH RELAY TO PASS THROUGH FORT RODD HILL

Sep 23, 2009

AS MAJOR UPGRADES TO THE FISGARD LIGHTHOUSE CONTINUE, THE MANAGER OF THE SITE HOPES TO HAVE THE FIRST PHASE OF CONSTRUCTION FINISHED FOR A BIG EVENT AT THE END OF OCTOBER.

DAVE KING SAYS ONCE THE FIRST PHASE IS FINISHED THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING WON'T BE READY FOR THE PUBLIC ...

"HOWEVER, I CAN TELL YOU THAT WE'RE EXPECTING TO HAVE THE OLYMPIC TORCH HERE ON OCTOBER 31, SO WE WANT THE EXTERIOR TO BE COMPLETED FOR THAT. AND, PAST THAT DATE WE HOPE TO HAVE THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AGAIN. PLUS THE NEW WASHROOMS OF COURSE."

KING SAYS HOT DRINKS AND DONUTS WILL BE OFFERED TO THE PUBLIC ON THE DAY.

"WE HAVEN'T ANNOUNCED YET WHEN THE TORCH IS COMING THROUGH, THATS UP TO VANOC, BUT WE DO KNOW IT'S ON THAT DATE."

ONCE THE FIRST PHASE OF CONSTRUCTION IS FINISHED AT THE LIGHTHOUSE, THE SECOND PHASE WILL BEGIN. THAT INVOLVES RECONSTRUCTION OF THE EXHIBITS.

Info we have now, includes a show/celebration on the Parliament Buildings lawn on the night of Friday, October 30th, from 5pm until about 8pm. At about 7:30pm, the flame shows up to the celebration, to wrap it all up.

Details are being announced this morning at Milestones, including names of some of the famous torch runners, including the one who will bring the torch into the day-ending celebration.

I'll update all when those details come in.

Set against the backdrop of the historic Legislative buildings, the Fairmont Empress and Victoria’s stunning Inner Harbour, the Olympic Torch Celebration (5-8pm) will feature a kaleidoscope of colour, energy and light in a multicultural, multidisciplinary spectacle.

The Main Stage will feature many of Victoria’s home-grown, yet widely recognized musicians, an ensemble performance of commissioned work performed by a mass choir and orchestra, as well as involvement by local luminaries, athletes and celebrities.

There will be a multimedia mega-projection and video wall, exciting street-level animation featuring giant puppets, interactive characters and lanterns, and a choreographed aerial sculpture which features audience inclusion and interaction.

Thousands of handheld torchieres, state-of-the-art glow products and a thrilling fireworks finale will mirror the symbolism of the flame, while adding to the beauty and spectacle of this momentous event.

Jeneece Edroff will be the final torch-bearer here, bringing it into the celebration on the Legislature lawn.

Daniel Lapp, Ken Lavigne and the Symphony will be part of the entertainment.

Of course there will be heavy lobbying to have Harper sing at the event:
