I'm debating whether or not to switch my cable and internet provider at home.

My monthly bill for Shaw high-speed internet and basic cable+premium channels (the package with OLN, History, etc) is $95.95 per month. With taxes it comes out to $104.60.

So what are you paying, who do you use, and how do your services break down dollar for dollar?

We get Shaw internet and phone but no cable, we pay about $60 a month for this.

We watch all of our TV on computers now, basically everything you want is out there for you to watch with fewer commercials and when you want to.

Are you watching shows hosted online by respective networks, or streaming feeds of actual channels?

I get my phone from Primus for $30/month which includes 2 lines, unlimited long distance, voice mail, call display, etc, etc, etc (I think its good value)

I get my internet and TV from Shaw and pay around $100/month and I get angry every month every time I open their invoice

I watch most of it from the channel websites. I watch a lot on Hulu. I also download some stuff.

When I watch cable TV I can not stand all the commercials and the lack of a pause button. Also watching on the laptops is more convient as I can move them around the house. We barely use our TV any longer, the boys use it for the Wii or Max watches Baby Einstein on it.

The only thing I can not watch is local TV, for that I would have to get cable or satelite. But since the local stations do not offer any unique programming i am not missing anythng

Pretty much even across the US, you get TV (80ch), HS internet, and phone (unlimited LD in NA) for a little under $100/mo.

Cable TV should be free. All it is is advertising and propaganda.

That said, I do pay $35 for basic cable and $41 for so-called high-speed (is 10 Mb/s really high-speed?), and with the modem discount and tax it comes to about $77 a month.

You're right, almost half of what we see and pay for on cable television is advertising.

Dude, the movie channels - seriously? They show eighth-rate movies. The only worthwhile channel is HBO Canada, but you have to get all of the other ones. OR just download the shows.

^Yeah I need to get rid of them. I added them for Entourage and have been too lazy to call shaw, be put on hold for 45 minutes, and then there be only a 50% chance that they actually actioned my request to cancel.

On a side note, does anyone actually get close to Shaws "maximum" internet speeds? At home I have 15 Mbps / 1 Mbps. But using their own speedtest I the highest I ever get is 8.6 Mbps, and real life performance is normally far lower than that, especially when downloading something large and "PowerBoost" stops.

8.6? I get 4.5 mbps!

And Shaw didn't bother to tell me that I've been using an outdated modem for the past five+ years (I've been with Shaw for well over 10 years and was still using their first generation modem until a month ago). My speeds were much lower before the modem upgrade but I was paying as much as anyone else.

:P

That speedburst thing skews results like these, but I was getting 6-8MB (That's MegaBYTES) per second downloading a trial from Adobe.

I set my machine to download the entire first 6 season of Entourage the other night. No problem, had them all within 14 hours as I slept. Don't know why you'd pay for a channel to watch it on.

How much of your subscription dollars actually filtered down to HBO? You'd be better off to download the shows and send HBO a cheque for half what you are paying - they'd be better off for it.

We probably have the same package as you, as our bill for internet/cable is the roughly the same.

I'm too lazy to change providers, since I have my webpages on the Shaw, um, thingee. As in I bought the domain name, and point it at pages hosted on a members.shaw.ca/ site.
