For now I think this is a key political issue based on current council's actions.

Maybe after the election the thread can be moved.

What is happening with RAP? Why? Ramifications?

I'm looking for an open discussion on how mayor and council have been 'negotiating' it's terms of use without public consultation.

Soccer's future threatened at RAP

Starting in 2013, a baseball team would gain exclusive use of park

By Devon Rowcliffe, Times Colonist November 13, 2011

The City of Victoria has announced plans to allow only one sports team to play at Royal Athletic Park (RAP) each summer, as of 2013. This would change the downtown park from a multi-use sports venue to a single-use facility, meaning that just one sports team would have the right to use RAP, to the exclusion of all others.

This is troubling, as RAP has served as downtown Victoria's outdoor multisport venue for more than a century. In particular, soccer has been played at RAP since 1908. RAP is currently home to two soccer clubs: Victoria Highlanders and Victoria United (the latter established in 1904). Both play in the highest level of soccer in British Columbia below Major League Soccer.

Well I would ask whether the Highlander games had similar attendance as the Victoria Seals.

While it seems silly that if the Seals and United could play at the same place why could these teams not play there as well. The Highlanders only came once the Seals were gone and the city kicked the Seals out through unreasonable negotiation. Right now it is pretty much just a soccer field and that is not really multuse either.

If you could have a for profit stadium in Beacon Hill Park that would solve the problem. Or a stadium could go down on the parking lots by the water. That would be a great place to watch soccer too.

It has a whole new look!

The ridiculous part of this whole thing is that the field can easily be shared by simply using and outfield fence with wheels. That the city would even entertain such a ridiculous proposition as banning all other uses because this proposed team cannot move the fence is a joke.

Thanks martini for bringing this up. I am going to ask Robin Kimpton his position on this issue and I hope with a new mayor in town ( Brown ) that we can do somthing on this issue. I remember as a boy peeking through the holes in the old wood fence at RAP to watch the events there and how cool I thought it was when they put up the chain link. Multiple use for sure!
