It will be a double edged sword. It will reduce expenditures, sell underutilized property, and it will eliminate jobs. The Department of National Defense cuts will most likely affect the Victoria area.
It has aleady started to happen with the elimination of the blue boat.

True, but aside from the monies directly recovered by the feds, the tax revenues for municipalities once this land is sold for commercial/residential development would help local governments offset the decreasing federal and provincial aid.
Good point Mike. I was assuming that the munis get paid taxes on the land now. Are the feds in fact exempt or are you suggesting that once the land is improved the taxes will increase?

The federal government pays no property taxes, they do make grants in lieu of taxes but these have no connection with municipal mill rates and very little connection to the value of the land.

As a non-military worker living in Esquimalt, I can't wait for some of that prime real estate to be sold off and developed appropriately. The military family housing by the base looks like a native reserve. In my opinion the crappiness of the land use near the base is 50% of what makes Esquimalt so dumpy. Thank goodness for the anonymity of the internet because I'd never get away with saying this in public.
Mark... Not certain who u are but.... Amen (and you got that for someone not religious).
