Hopefully the new owners of Christie's will invest and modernize a little and put their uninspired competition to shame.

I'm kinda surprised that there is no thread devoted to one of the pioneers and mainstays of the Victoria neighbourhood pub scene. As it happens, you too can own a landmark pub...if the price is right.

Wow! $6m is pretty aggressive, but I guess the competition is pretty limited around here. How did you find this info? I can only find it through your link, it does not come up when I searched through colliers website. Hmmm.

Fernwood must be the closest, you think?
I'll ignore Matt R.'s implication that The Fernwood Inn is not competition for Christie's - but strictly speaking, they are a liquor primary pub establishment whereas The Fernwood Inn is a food primary pubstyle restaurant.
I'd think that if Christie's fetched $6M, that would bode well for the ownership group at the Fernwood. It's sales per seat are likely comparable, although less profitable by being food primary (much higher margin on booze). The Fernwood also has 10 units of rental accomodation above it, which Christie's does not.

It also has decent redevelopment proposal along a main road should a future owner want to dabble in a mixed-use commercial/residential development. That's likely a component of the price as well.

Hasn't the City of Victoria now capped the amount of LP's?
A previous council suggested they'd like a cap, it was never written down, and the last one allowed more. They also granted themselves an extra 1400 LP seats for the Royal Theatre while they were at it.

Christie's, Maude Hunter's, Monkey Tree, Smuggler's Cove... a battery of pubs built in the 80s which haven't been touched since. Same dull, greasy, poorly-prepared food, and same interiors, including carpets which don't appear to have been cleaned since they were installed.
Hopefully the new owners of Christie's will invest and modernize a little and put their uninspired competition to shame.
I find the food at Maude Hunters and Christies is as good as ever. I don't care about the carpets.

Not trying to suggest that the other places mentioned are better or worse, I just think they are too far away to much competition to Christies as a local.

It's a five minute drive or a fifteen minute walk between Christie's and the Fernwood Inn. Is that too far?
