UVic has at least two threads, Royal Roads has one, I don't think Camosun does:

Fixup for aging Camosun could top $100 million
Lindsay Kines / Times Colonist

The lack of money to fix aging buildings, update classrooms and replace windows, elevators, plumbing and fire alarm systems poses a growing risk to Camosun College, students and school officials say.

The B.C. government’s own researchers estimate that the cost of deferred maintenance at Camosun tops $100 million.

“Within five years, that’s what it would cost to get us up to some kind of a reasonable level of current code,” said Peter Lockie, Camosun’s chief financial officer.

School officials, however, figure the actual cost is likely closer to $150 million once all associated expenses are included.

Lockie said the problems began accumulating about four years ago, when the government slashed the school’s maintenance budget by 75 per cent during the global economic meltdown.

“It’s a short-term economy and I can see why they did it, but it catches up with you,” he said.

Camosun breaks ground on new trades school

Construction of a new trades school kicked off with fanfare this week at Camosun College’s Interurban campus.

The province’s Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk joined faculty, staff and students Monday to break ground on the $30-million trades centre.

“Throughout British Columbia, we are building skills and trades training through targeted investments in infrastructure, equipment and programs,” Virk said.

The Centre for Trades Education and Innovation, a 7,432-square-metre building, will house a marine and metal trades training program that will include welding, sheet metal, metal fabrication, nautical and ship building, and more.

The existing trades facilities will also be refurbished as part of the project. The new facility will accommodate an additional 370 full-time equivalent seats in trades training programs. Currently, the college has more than 2,200 students each year in 20 different trades foundation and apprenticeship programs.

The Camosun College President was dismissed yesterday. Apparently her contract was renewed in January, and she was about to start her second five year term in days.

Her dismissal has been deemed to be no the result of just cause, so she will receive a severance package.

Seems strange. I wonder what the real story is?

Pics from today of the new trades building at interurban campus. Its a huge site and looks like it will be an impressive addition to the college. For those who say the province doesnt like to invest in the south island this would be a good counter example

Wow that building is going up quickly; I go by there weekly to visit our mom in Brentwood Bay and the site didn't look that far along even in the last couple of weeks. Nice.

Does anyone know what's happening at Camosun? President Kathryn Laurin was fired back in July and we still don't know why. I'm also hearing that the Dean of sports and the director of co-op learning may have been fired as well.

Camosun College officially opened the doors Thursday to its $30-million Centre for Trades Education and Innovation at the Interurban campus.

The 80,000-square-foot facility has space for a marine and metal trades training program that includes welding, sheet metal, metal fabrication, nautical and ship building and repair programs.

The school will also offer a mechanical trades program to train students in heavy mechanical trades and automotive service.

“Training young people in skilled trades builds prosperity,” said Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson. “The new centre will help students to gain the skills and experience they need to take advantage of exciting and rewarding careers.”

The centre will offer room for 370 full-time-equivalent seats in trades training programs.

CTV News has learned that a Camosun College instructor is no longer in the classroom and under investigation following an overseas class trip.

Administrators at the Victoria college confirmed an investigation is underway after a student made a complaint, but wouldn’t comment on any details, including what the teacher is accused of.

“Camosun College has received a student complaint. We have taken that complain seriously and began an investigation which is being conducted by an external party in order to ensure an unbiased and fair process to all those involved,” the college said in a statement.

“The investigation needs to be conducted with a high level of respect for the integrity of the process and for the privacy of all those involved including our students, and because of this we cannot comment further.”

Students in the nursing class also confirmed the investigation, saying they were asked to sign confidentiality agreements as part of the process.

Is that even a story?

Confidentiality agreements are worthless if someone decides to leak the information.

Camosun College has expanded to Songhees territory with the opening of a satellite facility that will provide a variety of marine-related training, including programs for First Nations.

The Camosun Coastal Centre, which used to be known as the Industry Marine and Applied Research Centre, is on Songhees land close to the Esquimalt Graving Dock.

Camosun takes over a site that was previously run by non-profit company SkillSource. “It’s a training centre that’s been focused and will continue to be focused on marine-industry training, which is also something that SkillSource was doing,” said Geoff Wilmshurst, Camosun’s vice-president of partnerships.

“So training with industry in the harbour area — for example, in the Esquimalt area, companies like Seaspan, Babcock Canada, etc., who are all interested in using that for training for their staff.

“Department of National Defence has been involved, as well.”

This is going to be a fun project - moving all those nurses out to Interurban will likely add about 2000 new car trips to/from the Interuban Campus and onto the nearby roads

~5300 health students in 2012

2012 Mode Share splits Lansdowne Vs Interurban

All driving modes: 64% at Interurban, 42% at Lansdowne

Sustainable modes (Walk/Bike/Transit): 37% at Interurban, 48% at Lansdowne

Newer numbers aren't available, but I doubt it has changed all that much in the last 5 years

2,000 car trips a day?

Yep - although that is a pretty crude estimate. There is a large margin of error on this one.

I'd say in the neighbourhood of about 2000 car trips/day.

Never mind the E&N, it's time to resurrect the Interurban Railway and get those cars off the road.

What's the rationale for not building these new buildings at the Lansdowne campus?

/\....my guess would be the availability of land, or lack thereof, at Lansdowne as compared to Interurban.

Also - and admittedly I'm purely sky-boxing here - but wouldn't new building/designs @ Lansdowne have to pass muster with the muni of Oak Bay? God knows OB throws a s*** fit even more than most local munis on everything from mass, to materials to (of course!!) building height: why therefore put up with that crap and insufferable delays from the Land of Ye Olde Musty Tweed Curtain when you'll almost certainly get a rubber stamp on anything proposed for Interurban?

There is more vacant land at Interurban http://camosun.ca/ab...ents/iu_map.pdf than there is a Landsowne http://camosun.ca/ab...ents/la_map.pdf
