Something about this guy really rubs me the wrong way. I've interacted with him a couple times and he comes across as a really smug and arrogant guy.

We're not used to describing extremely socialist politics as 'populist' but in this town that's exactly what his platform is. He's a lock.

I agree with you on both points Sam.

+1 and now that I am in Vic and out of ESQ I can now vote against both him, and Maddoff (for starts).

I have dealt with this pseudo historian and so called politician on several occasions. To me he nothing more than a thinly disquised anarchist who is more interested in pushing that agenda (albeit couched in politically correct language) than he is in working for prgress in any way shape or form. It's almost like that recyling commerical on TV where they state that "everytime you don't recycle it says something about you". In this case every vote for Ben Issitt says something about you as well.

My experience and opinion are similar. I will absolutely not be voting for this guy.

With big orange election signs it'll be hard to stop that train. He got elected based on stripes, and this first term was only a training session.

Isitt is a socialist and perhaps even a communist. Nothing wrong with being a socialist, I quite like most of our social structures and safeguards, but when a person is described as having "energy, vision and commitment to a more just distribution of resources" it really pisses me off.

Part of Isitt's platform in the last election was to "build a fair, safe and green Victoria." I'm no so sure what is unfair or unsafe about Victoria in 2011...The only unfair thing I can think of is how the city treats taxpayers, businesses and developers.

I have an issue with people who have never 'worked an honest day's work' in their lives promoting the virtues of a socialist egalitarian society. They seem to forget that it is the working class who funds their lifestyles. I have a lot more respect for the Bill Gate and Warren Buffet's of the world who make their money and then use it to the benefit of others.

I'm an environmentalist and communist and think Issit's not great on council and have never voted for him.  Like others have said, something about him rubs me the wrong way.  Seems more concerned with making empty political statements than getting any work done.  When you're on city council sometimes (or most all the times) you have to put results behind ideology.  People like him prefer to use chances to do some good or improve an imperfect project into chances to get up on a soap box and rant.

Has anyone ever read Isitt's Wikipedia page? It reads like he wrote it himself. Then again, any city councillor with a Wikipedia page probably wrote it themselves

My definition of a socialist is somebody that has nothing and wants to share it with everyone.

He broke the news of how disgraced City Manager Gail Stephens intercepted a consultant's draft report on organizing City Hall and secretly rewrote it for Council. Even if your politics are to the right of Genghis Khan you have to give him credit for that. In fact, right wingers, libertarians and other government haters should thank him for uncovering that sleazy backroom government antic.

Does that mean you should vote for him? I don't know. I strongly disagree with a lot of his views but then voting is not about supporting a "perfect" candidate. Perfect is the enemy of good. Remember, he's only one vote at the table so it's not like he's going to impose some sort of communist regime when we aren't watching.

You have to balance his often anti-urban views with his admirable tenacity when it comes to holding people like Gail Stephens, Fortin and the other bridge cheerleaders accountable. Sometimes it's valuable to have a guy like that at the table as long as there are other councillors like Coleman who aren't afraid of voting in favour of downtown condos over three storeys to balance him and Gudgeon.

That's one way to look at it, I suppose, but what concerns me about his style of politics is his agenda seems hidden from the average voter until he's ready to unleash something on us. One minute he's talking about changing Victoria's name, the next he's involved with a protest over some issue that your average tax payer shakes his head at, then he pushes a speed limit change that nobody that I've talked to wants or even remotely supports wasting money on, and then he'll end the day by calling south Island residents pigs for not having sewage treatment.

His style of politics just doesn't jive with with me. He's too far on the left fringe, IMO, and my concern is that despite a valid point being made before him which may be opposite his point of view, he won't consider changing his mind because he answers to a very specific group of people and he'll hold his ground for that reason alone -- at least that's how I perceived him and his actions over the last several years.

Wasn't it Ross Crockford's group that made the FOI act request and then asked for an inquiry into the issue? I don't see how Ben was involved unless it was to complain after the fact.

Phhhht.....his personal hero is Karl Marx, he rides the Siberian Express in an attempt to understand and recapture the "glory" of the Soviet-era 'workers revolution' and he hates the fact Christian symbology permeates Christmas while living in a (predominantly) Christian society. Go figure. That's all I need to know. I suggest he sign up as a private in the North Korean army where in one stoke he can commiserate with the "worker's army" to his heart's content, bask in their humanity towards their fellow proletarians - especially to the millions of starving peasants in the NK countryside - while being subsumed in Marxist thought and ideology, AND not be bothered by any pesky Christians. Win win win!

He should be chaining himself to trees, not sitting at council tables.

I saw Isitt at the Churchill last weekend and was surprised he was spending his dollars at a corporation.
