Where do you get your strawberries?

This 3 litre container of sweet berries was $15.00 at Galey's.

$15? Yikes. I had two strawberries on my cereal this morning that I plucked from the garden. You should consider growing them if you can, in a bed or a large pot. They are easy to grow, they're practically a weed. You just have to make sure the raccoons can't get at them.

The only thing that's gets these are the driver of the car, before they get home.

Or in my case squirrels. What's worse is the little buggers take a bite out of every strawberry, then scatter off. What the hell?

I just go to the local grocer or Costco for them. Sure, not local berries, but they taste the same.

Yesterday 3.99 for a pint of Local at Save-On, 4.99 for 2 lbs Dole brand. Makes the 100 mile diet kinda impossible to do.

I meant to say a 3 pint container was $15.00.

And we put them in zip lock bags and froze them in smaller quantities.

The local berries are a notch above anything else, and I think it's worth paying a bit more.

I bought a couple of pints at Save-On, but they were so squished in that they were beginning to turn to jam.

Where's a good place to get them in a non-squished, jam-like state?

I always went to a place in Central Saanich. It's on Livesay off Hunt. Really great strawberries.

I believe it's called Sol. I think they're no-spray.

Just follow the Strawberries signs off the highway at sayward. Really nice drive out there.

There are several 'pick your own operations' on Oldfield Road which is where we typically got ours in the past. This year we decided to grow our own and picked the first crop a week ago; they were delicious - and none were squished  :)

I picked with my kids on the weekend at Oldfield, because I heard Dan's Farm's strawberry crop was not as good.  They definitely were a bit smaller strawberries this year, but still fairly tasty.  They do not last more than 2 days though.  I made jam with most of what we picked.

Looking forward to the raspberries.

Well you can't pick strawberries at Oldfield Farm anymore; pulled up today only to find the entire operation closed and shut down for good. We were very surprised to say the least.Turns out the family sold the land last year and the new owners don't intend to farm it. Who knew?

Oh that's too bad.Often we'd go for a drive that way and stop in at various places to buy things.
