Hope it is more successful than the last Yuk Yuk's that opened here in the 80's; as I recall that one was somewhere on lower Johnson(ish). This iteration is an interesting choice of location given the 'mature' demographic that generally lives in the area who are not folks I would typically associate with patronizing a comedy club.

This seems an odd choice for that location.

How low is the ceiling? Apparently the lower the ceiling the better when it comes to comedy clubs.
I was in there recently and the ceiling felt quite low to me for a commercial space. The furniture has all been cleared out but everything else remains, even the salad bar. It would not take much to bring it back to life.
Maybe they could operate it in the daytime as well. They could have a coffee shop in the front and instead of an expensive comedian you just get a wiseass barista.

A Yuk Yuk's International Stand-Up Comedy club will be opening this fall in the former Samuel's Restaurant space in the Q Apartments, formerly the Queen Victoria Hotel, on Douglas Street at Belleville Street.
The operator is David Wilcox.
Sounds like maybe opening.
“If it wasn’t for the slow speed of liquor licences, we’d be open now.”Victoria’s Dave Wilcox and his wife, Yona Depue, will manage the club and own the franchise in partnership with Yuk Yuk’s. Wilcox’s company, Licenced to Laugh Productions Inc., has applied to Victoria for a liquor primary licence. If the liquor licence goes ahead, Wilcox said, he’ll lease the space from Vancouver-based Concert Properties Ltd. The former restaurant, with a capacity for 211, requires $150,000 in renovations. Concert Properties has agreed to cover some of the cost, Wilcox said.

My how the climate has changed. Nowadays you just wander in and ask the City for a LP license. And you have a good chance of getting it.

Or not.
Unanimously rejected.

Wait, that location isn't part of the downtown core? It's a block from the Empress, next to the museum and crystal gardens. I'd say it was on the edge of the core but absolutely downtown. The lack of parking would be the businesses' problem, not the city.

We need more parking for bars!

Marg Gardiner, president of the James Bay Neighbourhood Association, said the proposed location is already congested with buses and neighbourhood traffic.
“The noise and traffic issues in that area are just horrendous. It would have been really negative for the people that live there,” said Gardiner, adding dozens of residents spoke out against the proposed comedy club at a recent neighbourhood association meeting. “I think Yuk Yuk’s would be a great contribution to the city, but it should be in the entertainment district between Chinatown and Humboldt.”

Now I really hope the Crystal Gardens becomes a casino, bringing "entertainment" well outside of its James Bay residents-designated district.

Hang on, Marg; SOMETHING will eventually go in that space. If it's not a comedy club it'll be a dinner theatre or a coffee bar or more likely, a restaurant which is what the space was designed for and what occupied that space for many decades. I guarantee you, if a popular restaurant went in there Marg would suffer from twice the problems with traffic and parking that a comedy club would create. "Stay away from that comedy club, the chaos and traffic outside is horrendous" said no one ever.

i love how the city is gung ho to allow illegal pot dispensaries, but ask for a liquor primary and it is a flat out NO. we have our priorities so backwards and still we elect people who seem more reactionary than planned in their vision. Maybe they can use the space to feed the homeless.

That's not fair--for decades City Hall has kept a legendarily tight lid on new liquor primaries but recently we've seen them loosen up on this. But every city seemingly is struggling to figure out the phenomenon of pot dispensaries and what to do with them.

Rob, you have a way better handle on these kind of things than I. Can you provide two NEW liquor primary's that have been granted over the last few years?
