I've been saying for years we could use a casino downtown.

But the idea has West Shore politicians worried that the region isn’t big enough to support two casinos.

“We question whether the amount of revenue that they feel [BCLC] is missing is, in fact, in this marketplace and whether or not by opening a second facility what you’re going to do is create two mediocre facilities,” said View Royal Mayor David Screech.

BCLC spokeswoman Laura Piva-Babcock responded that “it would not be in BCLC’s best interests to consider a second facility if there were no additional market to serve.”

View Royal’s casino generated $69.3 million in revenue in 2014-15, down from $70.4 million the previous year, BCLC figures show.

BCLC has asked six communities — Victoria, Esquimalt, Saanich, Oak Bay and the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations — if they would host a casino smaller than View Royal’s.

Gotta love the politicians that can see half their revenue gone.

Langford Mayor Stew Young agreed.

“If they put another one in, it’s going to kill that [expansion] plan for sure. It doesn’t make sense to me,” Young said.

“You’re just going to have two small crappy ones. They should really do one big one, then the tourists and everyone else will go there.”

Right Stew, suddenly your casino is "crappy" if it has competition.

I know I'll get hell for this but what about a casino/theatre/maritime museum development at Ship Point?

Those mediocre/crappy comments are hilarious. Oops.

I'd say any casino proposal in the city should be put in an area that we want to transform and/or clean up and/or inject energy into. It might be a useful thing to serve as a bridge between downtown and Uptown, for example. The bonanza can help pay for street improvements, transit improvements, etc.

As far as music venues and theatres are concerned, we can't support the ones that we have with enough business to keep them viable. Adding more capacity isn't going to help.

Capitol 6 Casino?  Heck, we could use some of the letters from the existing sign too!

The casino is in  View Royal, not in Stew Young's bailiwick .

Stew gets money from it though. Less than View Royal but more than Colwood or anyone else in on it.

See the TC thread for the breakdown.

What's the odds of this happening, anyone want to roll the dice and make a bet?

Gambling scares me, used to work in a place that sold scratch and win and 6/49 lottery. Didn't think people got addicted to that type of gambling apparently I was wrong, people would come in and spend $100 a day on scratch and wins. I had somebody tell me they spent all their money on losing scratch and wins, and now can't afford to get gas in her car and she didn't think she had enough to get home. Before the government banned employees from playing lottery at their own places of employment to prevent fraud, one of my coworkers was known for playing all the scratching wins during his shift, we would come in the morning and they would all be gone.

But I guess it's an individual's choice and a good revenue stream for the government.. I suppose.

Yeah I just don't see it as a net benefit to society, but I don't think we should ban it.  I'd rather there be fewer casinos than more casinos.

I don't think the very few, as a percentage, that are addicted badly should make it such that we limit or ban it.  The best thing we can do is extract money for tourists' pockets downtown.  Travelers here on vacation are not often gambling addicts.

I have some issues with the casino being able to serve drinks, hire entertainment, serve food etc when no other business can do all of that with the added support of a monopoly on gaming.

Every convenience store and computer is already a Casino, so why not one more.

But tourists do not come here to use them. A downtown casino takes foreign cash, with very little social problems (for the attending foreigners) for us to deal with.

I don't know about that. I don't go on vacation (other than Vegas) and visit the local casino and I don't suspect many other tourists do either. When the View Royal casino was first built the premise was that it would attract tourists and that quickly fell apart after the first week.

What casinos do is compete with local entertainment dollars so bars and restaurants in the same area may want to take note.

I used to work with a local bar/pub/nightclub. Lots of out of town patrons asked about the casino. It's not the main draw like Vegss, but it can entertain a visitor for a few hours.

I do agree. This is tricky for sure.

That's a location issue. Put the thing within walking distance of downtown and the cruise ships and then you're talking tourist income.

To a tourist, View Royal is too far. Especially if you're just in town for 7 hours!

All of the cruise ships have casinos on them!

It would need to be a very high end casino to attract tourists.

In the mental health facility called downtown don't know if it may make the homeless issue a little worse to introduce a casino possibly? Most people on the streets I don't think venture to View Royal to gamble what little they have, but if a casino was dangled in front of them downtown

However a casino downtown might make enough revenue for the government so they can issue a gaming grant to build a new state of the art homeless shelter.

I was just about to say this. I entirely agree. It is attractive to tourists if it is convenient. I wouldn't go visit downtown Vancouver and then decide, "Hey I wanna head to Richmond to the River Rock"

However, if there were a sizable casino downtown I may just stumble in...
