Since we have a thread for Victoria, we should have one for the larger neighbour to the north  Also, there are already people jockeying for that election.

At the moment I assume RIchard Atwell will run for re-election and the rumour I hear is that Fred Haynes will challenge him.

I would be surprised if Atwell ran again but if he does then I think that Fred will handily win.

Fred Haynes vs. Richard Atwell would be a good chance for someone like Dean Murdoch to win.

I'm predicting a Frank Leonard comeback.  He won't need to quit his current job, maybe just take a leave.

If I still lived in Saanich and Leonard ran against Atwell, I'd vote for Leonard -- and I never thought I'd say that.

Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell is tops according to the Times Colonist polls (and employees speak very highly of him, clearly residents do as well).

Will be very tough to beat in 2018 election.

John Wilson from Wilson's Bus says he is thinking about running for Mayor or Saanich council next election.

^Maybe he would be successful at Council but voters would be unlikely to dump a fairly popular business-guy-turned-outsider politician for another business guy-turned-outsider politician. I think the only person that could defeat Atwell would be an experienced politician that has already sat at the table.

^ Well Atwell wasn't a businessman. He was a software developer for Motolora / Apple who had takn a 7 year sabatical befoe he ran for office.

I don't think John would be dumb enough to run. It would be bad for his business interests and he would be up against Fred who would like win.

I've heard there's likely 3-5 seats opening on Saanich Council so many of the people who ran in the by-election could actually get on this time.

At least 5.

My (uneducated) guess is that Atwell runs again for mayor, Murdock, Plant Harper and Haynes run again for council. Brownoff, Sanders, and Wergeland retire, and Susan Brice runs for mayor against Atwell.

If all the by-election candidates who said they'd run again run, I think for sure we'd see Rebecca Mersereau and Nathalie Chambers joint them on council, possibly with Ned Taylor or Geoghegan.

I would expect that if several seats opened up then we would see many more candidates. I think that if Brice or Haynes runs against Atwell then most of council would remain on.

Hard for people to sign up for 20+ hours a week for only 40k. I doubt he will.

I read Saanich News often - Haynes has been running banner ads since the beginning of the term. He's been gunning for Atwell's spot. There is not a doubt about it.

So if I read the TC right today, every single mayor plans to re run, save for Sooke thinking about it, and North Saanich unavailable for comment, on vacation.

That probably does not bode well for amalgamation if they all get re-elected.

Is Amalgamation Yes going to be active this election season?

Lately he’s been all over several of my usual websites as an ad too. He’s actually doing a really good job of putti his name out when I’m in Saanich.

Yesterday:

Q3: What are your plans for the 2018 municipal election?

A: The election is 9 months away.
I think we better serve our residents by focussing on the current work of good governance for Saanich. The election issues and decisions will come soon enough.

Fred Haynes
Saanich Councillor

Putticupids, and angels  can be found in both religious and secular art from the 1420's in Italy.
