Thank you for the heads-up, Kapten Kapsell!

Fire ravaged townhomes razed in 2017 are now the focus of a development proposal by BC Housing to deliver 21-units of supportive housing for First Nations, Metis and Inuit women.

What is also of note is this project will utilize Calgary-based Nomodic's modular construction techniques and materials.

Pardon my ignorance, but are Inuit women not considered "first nations"? Is the term "first nations" not meant to include all those who inhabited what is today Canada prior to European contact?

Aboriginal or Indigenous are terms than include FNs, Inuit, and Metis peoples, but FNs on it own does not. Inuit have quite a different history and lineage from other FNs

I don't get why this isn't at least six floors tall with ground floor commercial in this area. With the lack of ground presence at the VIHA site next door (another mistake) we have really gone all in on making this part of Hillside as uninviting as possible for the next fifty years.

^I don't believe anywhere does a BC Housing building have ground floor commercial, nor do I believe that government should be getting into the building commercial real estate business.  Besides, generally speaking the retail market is horrible right now

Well they should have sold the site or traded it for a less prominent one. The is a major corner in the city.

Also there is no reason that they could not have done a strata proposal so that the bottom could have been bought.

^in that case they should sell the entire Blanshard court site and buy some cheaper land in Esquimalt, etc

Very slight revisions on the Dev Tracker: https://tender.victo...Number=DPV00089

Also, it appears that this is a temporary modular project, with an intended lifespan of 5 years on the property.

In other words expect it to be around for several generations even as its cheap construction falls into ruin.

This is still ridiculous and once again a complete waste of an opportunity to create actual density that could house more people.

^exactly! Even just a mere two stories more could make a difference. As well the land slopes to Douglas, so in keeping in line with our boxed topped skyline, that phase should be as tall as the backside.

Why does this only have a lifespan of 5 years?  Seems very short, are they expecting it to be trashed in that time?

I for one am fed up with government supplying all this low income housing, and on prime property to boot!  What's wrong with places farther out where land is cheaper.  Sell the entire blanshard court property to a private developer and use the money to rebuild someplace else.  I have to assume that the buildings there are well past their lifespan and have probably been trashed

Its also delivering a message - burn down your building, don't worry, we'll just build another one, we have a bottomless pot of money to use!

The intent is for these temporary modular housing projects to address immediate needs while a more permanent solution is developed, at which time the buildings can be shipped back to the resource sector for the various work camps in the interior of BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. But as Milton Friedman said, "Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program."

...But as Milton Friedman said, "Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program."

This comes to mind:

Canadian finance minister Sir Thomas White's new temporary "income war tax act" Bill went into Committee of the Whole on July 25, 1917 but faced resistance. Wartime expenses forced the Tories to re-consider their options and in 1918, the wartime government under Sir Robert Borden, imposed a "temporary" income tax to cover expenses. Despite the new tax the Canadian government ran up considerable debts during the war and were unable to forgo income tax revenue after the war ended. With the election of the Liberal government of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King, much of the National Policy was dismantled and income tax has remained in place ever since.

Those evil, money-grubbing builders won't drop all their other projects to make this happen? The nerve!
