Suspended with pay.

According to B.C. Public Accounts, James was paid a salary of $307,892 in 2017 while Lenz made $158,120.

...Alan Mullen, a special adviser to the Speaker of the legislature, says there is an active investigation by the RCMP and both men are on paid leave...

It will be interesting to get some actual details of said investigation.

Some are saying the fact that there are two experienced investigators assigned suggests this is a very big investigation.

I am thinking this investigation will probably need its own thread.

Oddly, I can't find any buzz anywhere on what this is all about.

With the investigation already having been underway for 7 weeks before they walked out the door, it would seem likely that there would be something resembling basic information on what's up?

Anybody hearing anything at all?

BC Legislature's statement:

"We can confirm that, as per the motion, there is an active and ongoing criminal investigation being conducted by the RCMP and that a Special Prosecutor has been assigned."

BC Legislature's statement:

The RCMP investigating a former member.  Now who is in charge of security at the legislature?

Lenz, a former Sidney/North Saanich RCMP staff sergeant, is in charge of protective services at the B.C. legislature, which includes security for MLAs and their constituency offices. Last year, Lenz was paid a salary of $218,167 and claimed $23,606 in expenses.

Lenz implemented increased security measures at the B.C. legislature in the aftermath of a foiled terrorist attack on Canada Day in 2013. In 2016, he organized a meeting of top security officials from across North America to discuss how to prevent threats against people working inside legislative buildings.

Apparently you can sexually harass and assault someone. tamper with witnesses and lie to investigators and still get paid! :-)

I would agree but before we jump to any conclusions we need to remember that in BC we haven't had much success investigating or convicting politicians or their associates.

The only new info is that Speaker Plecas knew of problems back in January and brought in a political advisor at that time to help.

It looks like it will be some time before we find out further details as they are saying anything else would jeopardize the investigation. They are not even giving any clues as to what branch of the RCMP is doing the investigation.

If this is a criminal investigation, this could be the branch.

National Post is reporting they are being investigated for fraud and theft of public funds. They are being investigated by the financial integrity unit of the RCMP.

So Plecas hired his old school buddy Mullen to do a secret investigation and now wants Mullen as acting Sgt. at Arms.

I mean the term is soooo overused these days, but if this thing turns out to be true, the only adjective to describe this situation is "Trumpian."

I mean, there seems to be a lot of pitchforks being thrown at Speaker Plecas right now but until we know the nature of the alleged crimes we just don't know if Plecas is the hero or villain right now.

I don't quite understand why Mullen would need to be an acting Sgt. at Arms as the deputy is already automatically elevated to that role. I guess Plecas would have the right to suggest Mullen as a permanent replacement if the Leg approves but I don't know the procedure. I think this is the first time that position has been in the news in its own right. Except didn't a past Sgt. clobber a Clayoquot protester years ago? It's normally very low profile.

EDIT: Interesting news coming in one hour (noon), says Plecas.

Plecas is saying now that he will release a statement in 60-90 minutes that the media will find "very interesting". Sort of hinting that Mary Polak might not have her facts straight.
