Shawnigan-Lake-Village's-design-charrette-to-plan-for-lakeside-town's-future.jpg

Little has changed in Shawnigan Lake Village since this 1981 photo was taken near a service station that still stands on Shawnigan Lake Road at Mill Bay Road. Situated north of Greater Victoria in the Cowichan Valley Regional District, the Shawnigan Lake community's village core will soon be the focus of a visioning process to help direct its future development patterns and public realm improvements.

Shawnigan Lake is growing with new subdivisions being built and it is extremely underserved for retail.  I wonder when we will see some kind of proper shopping centre up there

Yeah, the little "village" centre doesn't have a lot going on. It's cute and all, but could use a little more development.

Currently thousands of residents who live in that area have to drive to Langford or Mill Bay for groceries. That’s an 8km trek just from the crossroads in the village to Mill Bay.

If you live on the west side of the lake you’re looking 12-15km.

About the only thing that's changed in that 1981 picture today are the cars. Other than that yeah the "village" really does need a refresh and an update, starting above all with some sort of a food mart or modest grocery outlet. And some paint!

^ isn't/wasn't there a grocery store to the left out of that photo?  and there used to be one on the other side of the lake too.

I think there’s still one just behind there, round the bend. It’s a little market.

Aitken & Fraser general store just across from the garage. Small convenience store. A couple of Sushi places, pizza place, Subway, coffee shop, fish & chips place.

Definitely would be nice to have a grocery store closer. Thrifty's in Mill Bay and Country Grocer in Cobble Hill are the closest.

Thanks for stopping by the Village Chippery website!

We serve up great food to great people: Hot sizzling fries made from Kennebec Potatoes, hand cut fish (cod, halibut, salmon) lightly battered in a special recipe batter, deep fried chicken breast strips, and a tempting variety of mouthwatering ground chuck burgers made right on site.

So come on down and pull up a chair, we would be happy to take your order!

We serve Shawnigan Lake and the Cowichan Valley including Duncan, Cobble Hill, Mill Bay, Arbutus Ridge, Malahat and Cowichan Bay, as well as any visitors world wide! Some of our specialties include (of course) our Fish and Chips, but don't forget our hamburgers, Poutine, Chicken, Seafood, chowder and wraps. And we have Take out!!
