The three big-name schools will highlight the eight-team NCAA Victoria Invitational on Ken and Kathy Shields Court at CARSA Gymnasium, it was announced Friday.

Also coming to the women’s hoops tournament on the University of Victoria campus are Bowling Green, Cal Baptist, Green Bay, Houston and the University of San Francisco.

“The teams alone will account for 400 to 500 hotel rooms — and that’s not counting the fans who come with them. With the fans who travel to watch their NCAA teams, we estimate that’s more than 1,000 hotel rooms in downtown Victoria in the low season,” co-organizer Howard Kelsey said.

Howard is looking good; and good on him for organizing this tournament.

Nice to see UVic b-ball getting some exposure again. Back when we were students in the 80's when the Vikes were a perennial power home games were a real big deal. People forget how good those men's teams were. In their heyday they played Oregon State which was a top 20 NCAA team at the time, in Oregon in front of 17,000 fans, and I believe they lost by something like only 15 points. Eli, the Kaz Brothers, Wiltjer, Dukeshire, Ken Larson and the crew were quite something to see in their prime...

So the branding for this really drives home how odd our region can be: Greater Victoria Invitational presented by the City of Langford. And then the games are played at UVic, which is in Saanich.

Langford and Saanich are both part of Greater Victoria, so it doesn't seem strange.

Now if it had been simply "Victoria Invitational" it would seem odder.

The university name is probably just referring to its mailing address.  ;)

Stanford is ranked #3 in the USA right now.  Mississippi #10.  Syracuse #17.

Should be some good bball.

Greater Victoria is Victoria, View Royal, Saanich, Esq. and Oak Bay, no? The “Welcome to Greater Victoria” signage is in VR and Saanich along the 1 and 17.

Know it all.

I don't think there's any real definition of "Greater Victoria". From a statistical perspective it refers to the Victoria CMA, so basically the CRD minus the Gulf Islands and areas beyond Langford and Sooke. In other senses it refers to the "core" municipalities (Victoria, Esquimalt, Saanich, and Oak Bay). Some might also say it refers to the "core" + View Royal as you've mentioned based on that highway signage.

But most commonly, "Greater Victoria" refers to the Victoria CMA area.

Maybe it has more to do with what city you write on your address. Sooke is Sooke, Sidney is Sidney. Langford is “Victoria,” but if you live in Central Saanich you won’t use Victoria for your mailing address, you’ll use Saanichton, maybe? CS City Hall has a Saanichton address.

But for some reason, Canada Post uses Esquimalt for Esquimalt, which is indisputably in "Greater Victoria".

Canada Post mailing standards in the CRD make less sense than just about anything around here.

Associated Press:

VICTORIA, British Columbia (AP) — Jordan Danberry had 17 points and four rebounds and No. 10 Mississippi State survived an early scare to thump San Francisco 73-38 on Thursday in the opening game for both teams in the Greater Victoria Invitational.

This was a fun event. Hope it returns for another year.

Third place game between Green Bay and Syracuse had an insane finish. The Orange were up 3 points with 2.6 seconds left, but Green Bay made the half court shot to tie it at the buzzer and then go on to win in OT. Check the highlights here: https://www.youtube....h?v=lQOr0CwEEs0.

Anyways, Stanford went on to win the event. They were #3 in the country going in, but after Oregon and Baylor both lost over the weekend, it looks like Stanford is going to jump to being ranked as the top women's team in the country when rankings are released today.
