Victoria has been awarded one of the four FIBA Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments from June 23 to 28, 2020. Will be held at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre and will see Canada attempt to qualify for the summer games.

The draw to see which teams will be in this mini-tournament will occur on November 27, 2019.

Luckily for Canada, the other host cities are in Croatia, Lithuania, and Serbia which eliminates some big name competition from being in Canada's draw. Still available for Canada's draw are Brazil, Italy, Greece, Russia, and Turkey.  It'll be tough for Canada but that will make for a good tournament.

TORONTO (Reuters) - America’s top athletes could be banned from the Olympics and other major international sporting events if the United States follows through on its threat to withdraw funding from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), anti-doping leaders told Reuters.

The U.S. threat has sent shockwaves through the anti-doping community and prompted several governments to urge WADA to introduce legislation that would find the U.S. non-compliant with the WADA Code, effectively barring American athletes from international competition.

“The consequences of a withdrawal of WADA funding by the U.S. could be more severe and far reaching for American athletes,” WADA president Witold Banka told Reuters.

“We have been approached by a number of governments of the world that were shocked by the threats from the U.S. government supported by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency).

“These governments want us to consider an amendment to the compliance standard meaning that non-payment by a government of its WADA contribution could lead directly to that country’s NADO (National Anti-Doping Organisation) being declared non-compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code.

The World Anti-Doping Agency will consider rules changes that would allow it to sanction the United States if it stops paying its annual dues to the drug-fighting organization.

WADA said in a news release Friday that "several representatives" of governments around the world had approached the agency with the idea.

"This matter has been raised by some concerned Governments, not by WADA's leadership, and as is the case with any proposal raised by a stakeholder, WADA has an obligation to consider it carefully," president Witold Banka said.

SYDNEY: Tokyo's postponed Olympics will go ahead next year regardless of the coronavirus pandemic, IOC vice-president John Coates told AFP on Monday (Sep 7), vowing they will be the "Games that conquered Covid".

The Olympics have never been cancelled outside of the world wars and Coates, speaking in an exclusive interview, was adamant that the Tokyo Games will start on their revised date.

"It will take place with or without Covid. The Games will start on Jul 23 next year," said Coates, who heads the International Olympic Committee's Coordination Commission for the Tokyo Games.

"The Games were going to be, their theme, the Reconstruction Games after the devastation of the tsunami," he said, referring to a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan in 2011.

"Now very much these will be the Games that conquered Covid, the light at the end of the tunnel."

TOKYO (AP) — The only thing more difficult than staging next year’s Tokyo Olympics in a pandemic might be convincing sponsors to keep their billions of dollars on board in the midst of economic turbulence and skepticism.

To make the point this week, IOC President Thomas Bach will join a number of Japanese government and city officials, local organizers and other top International Olympic Committee leaders in repeating a message they’ve failed to convey forcefully enough to deep-pocketed sponsors: Trust us, the Tokyo Olympics will open on July 23, 2021.

Bach and IOC vice president John Coates — who oversees Tokyo preparations — are expected to speak remotely to Japanese officials as they meet on Thursday and Friday. The agenda includes plotting countermeasures against COVID-19: quarantines, rules for athletes entering the country, testing, vaccines and the presence or absence of fans.

A 22-year-old Olympic surfing hopeful from El Salvador has died while training for an upcoming qualifying competition, the country's National Institute for Sport (INDES) has confirmed.

...

"Katherine came over to hug her [friend], as soon as she finished hugging her, the noise was heard," Diaz's uncle, Beto Diaz, who says he was in the water with her, told a newspaper in El Salvador. "She, the friend, was thrown by the force of the lightning strike too, the board threw me back. Katherine died instantly."

I assume surfing shuts down if there's a chance of lightning like MLB and golf, tennis etc. And those sports usually have trees, lighting, flagpoles to lessen the chances. Weird.

Sabrina Maddeaux: Canada’s 2021 Olympic outfits have one message — we’re a joke

In 2021, does Canada deserve better than uniforms that look like they were vandalized by angry teens with Sharpies? Not really

I can imagine in 20 years some rocker punk will find that jacket in Value Village and think it’s the baddest thing ever, with Canada and Toxic written like that.

I think it says Tokyo. For the Closing Ceremonies only, it's ok.

Perhaps Team Canada will burn these so-called uniforms as part of the closing ceremonies. I'd be OK with that.

It does, I am just pointing out what people first see. Looking for the ACAB logo somewhere as well!
