Saanich MMA fighter hopes to go from bartender to world champion
After his first major win, mixed martial artist Saanich set his sights on the world heavyweight title.
Dustin Joynson was 19 and working as a bartender when he was inspired to change careers. After watching UFC pay-per-view fights at the bar where he worked, Joynson decided to give it a try.
He went to the mixed martial arts gym and told the staff that he wanted to fight. The trainer wanted to see two years of hard training before Joynson could take part in his first fight. Ultimately, he didn’t make his amateur debut until 2012, more than four years after he started training. Two years after that, in 2014, he made his professional debut. Since then, he has earned a 7-1 win-loss record across several competitions, fighting everywhere from Vancouver to Singapore.

Now Joynson is looking forward to that opportunity. He trains every morning and in the evenings works as a school janitor in the Saanich School District to ensure a stable life. Typically, fighters earn $10,000 to enter and $10,000 to win, with pay increasing for more experienced fighters.
“If I don’t win now, I won’t earn anything. At least I have a full-time job and I’m on a pension, so I’m still trying to figure out my future in terms of that,” he said.
“People say, ‘Why don’t you go and become a full-time fighter?’ Because I don’t make that kind of money yet. I tell them that when I get Conor McGregor’s money – a few million a fight – then I’m out of my day job.”
