The BC Coroners Service is investigating after three people were found dead in a gravel pit Sunday on Vancouver Island.

Sources tell CTV News a fourth person was airlifted from the scene, near Coombs, with serious injuries.

Residents tell CTV News the gravel quarry is a popular place to ride dirt bikes and shoot guns. The bodies were reportedly found by youths dirt-biking in the area.

RCMP statement:

Police investigating following the discovery of three bodies in rural Qualicum Beach
Oceanside

2020-11-02 12:00 PST

File # 2020-11359

Oceanside RCMP and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit are investigating after three bodies were discovered on Sunday afternoon in rural Qualicum Beach.

On November 1, 2020 shortly after 2 p.m., a person riding his off road motorcycle on Melrose Forest Service Road in rural Qualicum Beach, came across an unresponsive man. The motorcycle operator immediately called the BC Emergency Health Services (EHS) and the Oceanside RCMP.

When police and paramedics arrived, they located the man and confirmed he was dead. Nearby, they found a burned out travel trailer with two deceased adults inside, and a man in another trailer who had appeared to have been shot. The shooting victim was airlifted by BC EHS to hospital and is now in stable condition.

Oceanside RCMP sought assistance of the VIIMCU, who has arrived and is taking conduct of the investigation.

Cpl. Jesse Foreman of the Oceanside RCMP states, As this investigation is in its infancy, there are many questions that remain unanswered. Initial findings lead investigators to believe that this in an isolated incident between parties well known to one another. We do not believe there is any on-going risk to the public.

VIIMCU investigators are working hard to uncover facts and are enlisting expertise from several support units, adds Supt. Sanjaya Wijayakoon BC RCMP Major Crime Unit Operations Officer.

The BC Coroners Service is conducting its own fact finding investigation to determine who died, and how, where, when and by what means they came to their death.

The names of the deceased are not being released at this time.

Should you have any information or have dash camera or trail camera video in relation to that area, please call the tip and information line at (250) 380-6211. Media enquiries will be handled by VIIMCU.

That would be some accident if all the vehicles involved somehow spontaneously caught fire.

I agree but the news report seems cautious about whether vehicles were actually burned. It does sound like a possible execution.

At some point they'll confirm homicides but also that the "public is not at risk".

Can't say I'm too torn up if a couple of minor-league gangster wannabes die of lead poisoning in a gravel pit somewhere.  Better than the drive-by in public shootings that put the rest of us at risk...

So the area is adjacent to a suburban community that is cut off by the highway, and has quite a large number of rural homes. It’s actually quite odd, in that you’d never know this place existed if you had no reason to be there. The only way to access the suburb is via the old coastal highway.

The gravel pit appears to have gravel access roads leading to this community, which might allow people to connect with Highway 4 without going through Qualicum. It’s really an odd residential area the way it’s hidden.

Here’s the site of the quarry: Melrose Rd, Qualicum Beach, BC V9K 2M9
