🔹BC Highway Patrol appears in-the-making as federal agency announces employment positions province-wide🔹

Job postings have begun emerging for a Highway Patrol division of policing services, province-wide.

Island offices identified in a federal job posting seeking support staff services identify Victoria, Chemainus, Parksville and Campbell River as work place locations. The posting has a deadline of December 31, 2021.

BC does not currently have a highway patrol agency. A patrol division formerly acting in that capacity was merged with the British Columbia Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) in 1988.

Limited information is presently available aside from job descriptions of support staff.

Didn't we disband a similar agency back in the late 80s or early 90s?  There was the small building on the south side of the Second Narrows Bridge in Vancouver that housed both EHS and a crew from whatever the agency was called (I can't remember....was it Sheriff where they were doing more than court services?) .  It had a small underground shooting range.  It was all torn down when they upgraded the highway.

It might only be posted to internal federal job listings, but the jobs are/will be available for the public to apply to.

Ah, yes I see them now on the jobs.gc.ca site.

I don't think this is a new 'BC Highway Patrol' being created - these appear to just be for a pool of detachment assistant jobs in the various RCMP municipal/provincial traffic services offices. These units already exist throughout the province - ie. South Island Traffic Services is based out of Chemainus. North/Central Island Traffic are out of Campbell River and Parksville, respectively.

The job posting corresponds with the detachments listed here: http://traffic.bc.rc...&contentId=3645

Besides, if there was a 'BC Highway Patrol' being created, I would assume it would be run by the province and not the RCMP.

Yeah, whatever the case may be, they’re doing a mass hiring, and they are separate from existing RCMP postings. This is rather intriguing, to have jobs referring to what most of us have no idea exists/existed.

On second thought, maybe this is where all the VicPD officers Ben Isitt will lay off will end up working?

Should never have disbanded the BC Provincial Police in favor of the RCMP, heh.

A good overview of the site is here;

What Happened to the BC Highway Patrol?

The special constable status of patrol members was challenged in 1982-83 and as a result, a provincial judge removed their status and ability to enforce infractions. Municipal and RCMP Traffic Services took over patrol enforcement duties and from 1983-1988 the highway patrol focussed only on removing stalled vehicles, attending collisions and doing brake checks at Horseshoe Bay terminal approach.

Following the privatization of highways in 1988, the patrol was merged into an early version of today’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement Branch, joining commercial vehicle Weighmasters and Motor Vehicle Inspectors to form the Motor Vehicle Branch.

The rebranding into BCHP is taking place now. 455 employees work under the banner, which was formally referred to as the RCMP Traffic Services division.
