Meet the 'blowsy ladies,' the vibrant rhododendrons of Victoria's royal residence

Stunning and sturdy flowers bloom at Government House in B.C.'s capital

Remember when we were known as The Garden City?

Around 1995 nearly everyone stopped watering lawns and gardens.

It really caught on.

The nicer gardens are now in the backyards due to the deer. We previously had about 100 years void of a deer. but the deer are cute right?..

90% of the grass is still green around me

Yes, excellent point Todd. Myself included, my garden is totally hidden from the street to protect it from the deer.

Only one or two houses around me let their lawn yellow. A healthy, properly watered lawn has a cooling effect in the summer. It makes more sense to keep it green.

And a green lawn is not dusty, doesn’t stays the same material all summer long, helps remove harmful elements from the soil

We don’t have a water shortage in the CRD

I would keep it green, if it didn't cost me hundreds to do it.

City folks look at our “lawn” at work in the summer and wonder how we keep it so green…

Sounds like you need Mike K’s guide to keeping lawns green with less water.

There’s a few tricks you can do, like fertilizing for root growth. Deeper roots means more access to moisture, and you don’t have to water as much.

Oh, I have a decent setup for keeping it green if I want to, but there is no getting around the costs (its not just the water bills either, keeping the sprinkler system maintained etc.).

I've long chosen to just let it brown and save the money and time.
