If you’re looking for Romance, you might want to attend this weekend’s Victoria Classic Boat Festival in the Inner Harbour.

There, you’ll find Romance and about 70 other classic wind and power-driven pleasure craft from all over the Pacific Northwest gathered to celebrate the region’s rich maritime history, Friday to Sunday.

This is the 44th year for the classic boat gathering, hosted by the Maritime Museum of British Columbia. The event attracts vessels from both sides of the border, with up to 10,000 visitors expected to view the boats, moored by the public docks along Wharf and Government streets over the Labour Day long weekend.

Some of the boats will be open to the public and visitors can meet and chat with the owners.

The festival kicks off in the Inner Harbour at noon on Friday. A sail-past starts at 11 a.m. Sunday, with the best views from Ogden Point Breakwater and Clover Point.

A sail race takes place immediately after, between Clover Point and Ogden Point, with Dallas Road the best spot to watch the spectacle.

Take a moment during the festival to step aboard China Cloud, a 45-foot junk-rig sailing vessel built on the beach with a handsaw and axe by Allen and Sharie Farrell in 1982. The ship’s current owner, Eden Murray, is this year’s recipient of the Abernethy and Gaudin Boatbuilders Young Boaters Scholarship.

Admission to the festival is by donation (suggested $25)*, with volunteers on the docks to give out stickers to indicate you have already donated*.

The docks will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The boats will start arriving in the Inner Harbour at noon Thursday.

* and to shame those that did not donate $25.

Maybe the TC just messed up.

Anyway, what this thing needs is food trucks/boats, live entertainment, a bouncy castle and a beer garden.  Maybe pot delivery too.

They are going to be disappointed if this wrong price made it into the TC print edition today, or it doesn't get fixed soon.

Maybe a retraction tomorrow might salvage it.

TC readers can afford a little more. Print newspapers are marketed to the upper class.

My wife and I are volunteering at this event on Saturday, we will be more than happy to take your $25 donation, but it is a $5 non-mandatory donation.

If you are paying by credit or debit, it is automatically set to $5, you don't have to select an amount.

Don’t forget to bring a stack of $20s for the boat owners. they may look flush with their fancy boats but might just be their pride and joy, the fanciest thing they own. Some people do a full varnish before every show.

Greater Victoria residents are invited to explore and observe 80 history-rich boats as the 45th annual Victoria Classic Boat Festival sails into the Inner Harbour over the Labour Day weekend.

From Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, spectators will get the chance to see the expertly restored, rebuilt, and maintained historical vessels while they moor alongside the Inner Harbour docks, and on the water for the Sunday morning sail past and sail race.

In a news release, Brittany Vis, executive director of the Maritime Museum of BC and festival administrator, said “The festival began in 1977 with the idea that our maritime heritage must not only be preserved, but also celebrated. This special 45th celebration in the Inner Harbour, the festival’s open docks, events, and activities serve to engage our community and visitors with our maritime history, culture, arts, music, and its ongoing story.”

At the classic boat show, visit the Golden Rule

I am writing as a veteran to invite everyone to attend the Victoria Classic Boat Show on the Inner Harbour during Labour Day weekend. Be sure to meet with the veterans who crew the Golden Rule and learn the story of this amazing little craft.

Your grandparents will remember when nuclear weapons tests sent radiation into the atmosphere. They will remember a Pacific Island called Eniwitok.

The Golden Rule was the first ocean-going vessel to sail toward the Marshall Islands in protest of the threat that those tests represented.

The story of the voyage and its end helped bring about the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Later, at a meeting in Vancouver, the inspiration provided by the Golden Rule led directly to the birth of Greenpeace. She has quite a story.

The Golden Rule sank in 2010. She will be at the Classic Boat Show thanks to the efforts of Veterans for Peace, who spent five years raising and restoring her.

She returned to her original mission. For the past decade she has called at ports in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, educating tens of thousands about what can be done to stop the threat represented by nuclear weapons today.

The story of the Golden Rule is of special interest to veterans, maritimers, and all who wish to learn about the prospects for peace in these troubled times. Don’t miss it.

A 96-year-old woman ticked off an item on her bucket list when she sailed into Victoria on what is believed to be British Columbia’s oldest locally built sailing vessel still in active service.

Dorothy Zimmerman, who came from Minnesota to Victoria specifically to see SV Dorothy, said she fell in love with the vessel when she learned of the 127-year-old boat’s restoration project.

“I’m just 30 years younger than [SV] Dorothy,” said Zimmerman, who turns 97 in October.

The Victoria-built sailboat had been sitting in a shed on Gabriola Island for more than a decade as the Maritime Museum of B.C. gathered the funds needed for a refit.

Angus Matthews, who sits on the museum’s board of directors, said he and Zimmerman struck up a lively three-year correspondence over email about the 30-foot wooden sailboat.

When Zimmerman found out that SV Dorothy was coming into Victoria, she was determined to visit.

“I’ve got to live long enough to get out here,” she said.

She would do more than just see the boat. On Wednesday, Zimmerman donned a pink puffer jacket and sun visor and steered SV Dorothy into the Inner Harbour as part of a five-person crew.
