Nanaimo bans natural gas as primary heat in new homes as of July 2024

New construction won’t be allowed to have natural gas as a primary heat source as of July 1, 2024 — six years before the provincial target

Saanich and Victoria were the first municipalities in the province to adopt zero-carbon step code regulations.

Others that have taken steps to combat emissions from new buildings include Central Saanich, Whistler, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Squamish and Port Coquitlam.

Sadly, that might have to be the way. Look at the costs involved.

$31 bill. For $2.84 in gas.

I'm generally a fan of the breakdown.

I could add a few comedy lines in there too.

The basic charge is a bit of a joke.  Yes, I presume they need one, but there is no "cost to be connected" to the system, really.  There was maybe a cost to initially connect to the system but I supposed that was billed already.

Deliver, storage and transport, could all be manipulated to meet a certain end.

The most loathsome part is the nearly $5 in taxes and government levies. 🤬

Can anyone explain to me where all the electricity for both cars and all new houses is supposed to come from.

We will all use less, so more can use it.

And those who use more, will pay much more, for the privilege. If you happen to live in a house, it’ll affect you most. If you have children, it’ll affect you more, too. If you run a business, you’ll just pay more, and pass that on to your customers, so ultimately, everyone will just pay more, for ultimately less.

Well bill is $26.80 but yeah, that is a crazy break down.  What does this bill look like in the winter?  Why so little gas?  The carbon tax on the gas costs more than the gas.  Wow...

It’s averaged out for the year, so either you have a little more charge or a little reimbursement EOY, but every month they charge $31.

It’s crazy, isn’t it? 10x the usage cost for the final bill.

Mine is not averaged out over the year. In the summer months, when my gas is connected but I'm not using any, I pay between 12-15 dollars/mo.

I don’t think you have to have it averaged. But it helps some with budgeting.

The $31 is the only averaged part. The line items are true for the month.

I look at it this way. It costs about 160 bucks annually for the service, and then the rest is usage. I keep it because its my primary heat source in the winter (supplemented with baseboards).

If I averaged it over a year, my bills would have been 61/mo in 2022.

That damn Sun gives us enough energy for all our needs. We just need to find better ways to harness it.

I get my heat from 15 feet under the ground. It also cools me in the summer. All operated with a minimal amount of hydro electricity (read water through a wheel).
How green is that?

I’ve got news for you. The Sun also provides that.

If we had no Sun the earth would be just a few degrees over zero Kelvin.

The sun can’t warm me in the dead of winter like the ground does.
