Love the Era-treatment of the old facade, but wow do I wish the new construction had a bit more panache. Even 5% more verve, gusto, esprit, oomph. "Hey, I'm a new building on Government Street just a stone's throw from Chinatown and I'm really happy to be here!"

...I wish the new construction had a bit more panache...
My biggest concern about this and the Spencer Block developments is the possibility of "dumbing down" the facades shown in the renderings. In the end, its the facade details that are going to make or break these projects.

I've said it many times before re: these kinds of modern "old town" projects: there should be some effort to differentiate the ground level from the levels above. The exact same look shouldn't be repeated right down to the pavement. Give us a different colour or a different material, maybe a wood-look for the doors/windows on the ground-level units, maybe a touch of a glossy tile in a striking colour (maybe black, or yellow, or red). It doesn't have to be a complicated thing. Just a touch of something. Some small embellishment to set it apart and give it some personality.

...is it becoming harder and harder to find a place to convert torque these days?
This Government Street location was very confusing for tourists. As you know, Americans say "wool cap" instead of "torque".

...I’m not sure the tourist bus from the cruise ships took people so far.
I was talking about the horse-powered carriages.

That little building in the middle is going to look pretty odd...
Since the buildings surrounding it won't be more than 6 floors tall, I don't think the Sam Kee Laundry building is going to look out of place. It's mostly going to be enveloped by the recently proposed building, so this will also help "tie it in".
