AVs and robotaxis will be the norm in major cities by 2035

Major cities across the globe will have fleets of level four autonomous vehicles (AVs) by 2035, according to GlobalData's new The Future of Industrials report.

Level four automation refers to a vehicle’s ability to drive itself independently (within parameters, such as software geofences). The report predicts that sales of level four and above AVs will reach four million units by 2040, and notes that level four robotaxis could be rolled out as early as 2025.

Seattle is welcoming more self-driving car companies

  • Earlier this year, Amazon-owned Zoox and California-based NVIDIA obtained permits to conduct that type of AV testing in Seattle.

The latest: Next week, GM-owned Cruise plans to start "manual data collection" in Seattle, a phase CEO Kyle Vogt described as "the first step towards launching commercial service in a new city."

Well, they can change that.  Level 3 is currently allowed, at least in most of Canada.

BC being one of the last places in the world with Uber though makes one wonder.

8 days until the Tesla Robotaxi event in California.

Shares in the EV maker are up more than 20% over the past month, in anticipation that deliveries could improve year over year and sequentially in the third quarter, and ahead of the company’s robotaxi day on Oct. 10.

Tesla plans to host investors and fans at its “We, Robot” marketing event at a Warner Bros. Discovery movie studio in Los Angeles.

The automaker is expected to show off the design of a “dedicated robotaxi,” which Musk has referred to previously as the CyberCab. Tesla may also provide updates on its humanoid robotics project “Optimus” and other automotive and AI-driven products and services.

Tesla is also expected to announce self-driving trials in one or more cities, likely starting in Texas. Beyond these, there's speculation about possible previews of Tesla's new "2.5" models and updates on its Optimus robot, though these are less certain.

Tesla loves to put on a show, and Thursday’s Robotaxi reveal might just be the flashiest of them all.

The electric vehicle maker is slated to unveil its much-hyped Robotaxi vehicle at Warner Bros. Discovery’s movie studio in Burbank, California. For those attending, doors will open at 5 p.m. PT, with remarks beginning at 7 p.m. PT.

In usual Tesla fashion, we expect the company to livestream the “We, Robot” event on its YouTube page and on Musk-owned X. We’ll include an embed here when Tesla posts it.

Musk first teased the Robotaxi event in April, setting a date of August 8 for a reveal — a date that Tesla had to push back due to “an important design change to the front.”

The Robotaxi reveal appears to have come at the expense of a next-generation $25,000 EV that Musk also promised. A few weeks after Musk announced the Robotaxi event, he slashed more than 10% of Tesla’s workforce and said the automaker was going “balls to the wall for autonomy.”

Musk has promised autonomous capabilities in Tesla vehicles for years. The company’s advanced driver-assistance system is rather brazenly named Full Self-Driving (FSD), despite the fact that it is not fully self-driving and requires a human driver to pay attention and take over if needed — a fact that is borne out again and again in drive-along videos that fans regularly post on social media.

Tesla’s robotaxi is set to have two front seats and butterfly-wing doors, and CEO Elon Musk is expected to discuss deploying the Full Self-Driving assistance software on the Semi big rig, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday.

The billionaire is expected to make the announcement when the electric-vehicle maker unveils the robotaxi at a highly anticipated event on Thursday, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
