What Toronto run? Only Rouge offers a Toronto flight.

WestJet has a seasonal Toronto flight out of Victoria. Starts back up this Saturday 4x weekly (Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat).

That'd be a long, long ways away still. The Toronto run and sun destinations will be mainline for the foreseeable future. And the Calgary runs do pretty well with the largest 737s (800s) in the fleet, so that shouldn't change anytime soon.

WestJet's current fleet strategy is pretty much all investment in the mainline, with 60 new plane orders. Encore only has 3 or so orders, and the existing fleet is already pretty taped out on routes.

Like you say though, if Swoop grows to what they want it to be, then it will certainly become the next Rouge and likely would take the Toronto and sun destination routes. Especially if WestJet is truly focused on going international with its incoming 737 MAX orders.

Just remember though that YYJ is a growing airport and jet service will grow alongside that. WestJet will never stop serving YYJ with jets, so unless it's Swoop, it'll be the mainline.

They are going to real international when they start flying 787's including Asia and South America.

I'm flying direct to Toronto on WestJet in a couple of weeks. Hope they don't strike!

Direct or non-stop?

Yep, Air North flights start next week. The route is Victoria-Kelowna-Whitehorse. You can either book the first leg and get off in Kelowna, or stay the full one-stop duration to Whitehorse.

The inaugural Victoria schedule has Monday and Friday afternoon departures from Whitehorse. Friday’s flight is direct to Victoria, returning to Whitehorse via Kelowna. Monday’s flight sees a brief stop in Kelowna for Victoria-bound passengers with direct return service to Whitehorse

Yes, of course, but what I mean is that they are reinvesting into their mainline fleet with 737 MAX jets which have the range to go all over Europe from Eastern Canada. So theoretically they could fly internationally with both their 787 and 737 MAX jets.

If they only fly international with their 10 787s, then they won't be biting much into Air Canada's business, as that's only a small fraction of WestJet's total fleet.

Mike  mentioned this a day or two ago.

https://www.ch-aviat...lease-two-a320s

Jetlines (Vancouver Int'l) has signed a term-sheet for the lease of two A320-200s. The Canadian ULCC start-up said in a disclosure that it is aiming to conclude a definitive lease agreement before the end of the current quarter. Once done, it will be able to provide new guidance on its projected start-up date and aircraft delivery schedule.

Jetlines has previously Jetlines had previously intended to lease in B737-800 equipment but was forced to abandon those plans citing a constrained leasing market.

Why does Victoria's 2nd largest airport not have direct public transit access, or at least a stop nearby?

What, the harbour? What's the passenger volume? Is there no stops on Wharf?

One north of Yates, ya.

What's the passenger volume?

It's the 2nd largest passenger volume of any water airport in Canada.  Vic-Van is the most frequent route in all of Canada, if you add all 4 airports.

Maybe it has low passenger volumes because public transit is poor.

It has massive passenger volumes for what it is. 550,000 people fly in and out of the harbour each year. That's not bad for an airport handling aircraft with 4-20 passengers.

Where does that number come from? It was just shy of 200,000 in 2015 per Statistics Canada, so that would be quite the jump to almost triple that in a couple of years.

Hmm, I don't think that figure represents the Helijet operation while mine does. I actually don't know where I would have gleaned the 500k figure from but obviously it's way, way over.

But those stats also seem a little off. YYJ says 1,710,825 passengers passed through its gates in 2015, but the feds in that document say it was only 1,661,789.

There's a new bus stop literally as close as possible to the Harbour Air terminal, immediately adjacent to the terminal driveway at Wharf & Broughton.

Also worth noting that Harbour Air runs a very good free shuttle to most hotels downtown, which you can use even if you're not staying at the hotel.

Most airport shuttles can be used by pretty much anyone to get to a hotel, even if you're not staying there...

Well, not the shared ones from big airports, they ask to collect your transfer/ticket.

^ I've never been asked for that, for hotel run shuttles. If you're talking about the airport run ones, that's different, I guess.
