I wonder is this will attract any more passengers thru YYJ or just opt for the start in the Port of Vancouver

Sunwing introduced Huatulco last winter but they had been running PVR and Cabo prior to that. They had three services last year. All three airlines did PVR last year. Sunwing used Viva Aerobus to operate the PVR route.

I completely forgot about the ViVa ViVa Bus..... no more ViVa Aerobus.....   :(

It’s not being heavily marketed beyond the Island, so it’s not likely to draw many to the Island to start the cruise, but you never know.

Since many of the Cunard passengers would likely be British, might they combine this with some sort of charter flight, direct from the U.K.?

It's possible. I used to live in Banff, and a significant number of British and other European visitors shared the same itinerary: flight to YYC, coach bus to Banff, train to Vancouver, cruise to Alaska, flight out of YVR. Most included a few days in Vancouver, so I ended up giving out a lot of directions and recommendations for Victoria day trips!

Floating around the SunWing website for winter destinations from YYJ.

 

Didnt know they added some NEW destinations.

 

Mazatlan starts Dec 22 operated by Viva AeroBus

Nobody seems to know or advertised it ( VV or VAA or even a media relase from SW )

Very interesting. Just checked Sunwing last week and it was only HUX and SJD listed, so these are very recently added. Great additions for YYJ!

Canada Jetlines Ltd. (JET: TSX-V; JETMF: OTCQB) (the “Company” or “Jetlines”), the first ultra-low-fare carrier in Canada has staged a protest in the one place the airline duopoly think they own: the sky. Using four planes, 18 skydivers and the Jetlines CEO, an airborne protest was staged to call out the lack of Canadian airline competition. This act was to rally Canadians, investors and the Competition Bureau around the idea of increased competition and decreased airfares.

The ultra-low-fare carrier is encouraging people to go to Jetlines’s website fightback.jetlines.ca/ and sign an online petition that will be presented to the Canadian Competition Bureau, the government agency that ensures markets operate in a competitive manner to prevent abusive monopolistic practices. While several airlines have attempted to enter the Canadian market, the duopoly has pushed them out with short-term match-pricing at prices below their avoidable costs. Thus far, Canada’s Competition Bureau has done little to rectify this issue. The Competition Bureau is currently investigating WestJet and their subsidiary new airline for “predatory pricing” to undercut new entrants. Under Canada’s competition laws, predatory pricing occurs when an incumbent with market power sets its prices below avoidable costs.

“Canadians pay among the highest airfares in the world and we’re the only developed country without an ULCC as two high cost airlines control approximately 85% of the domestic market.” says Javier Suarez, CEO for Jetlines. “We know Canadians are fed up as there are between five and six million passenger trips per year by land over to the US each year to fly on US low cost carriers, based out of northern US airports, that in many cases only operate from those airports due to the robust Canadian passenger traffic. We’re urging consumers to go online and to show their support for more competition and lower fares in Canada”.

The entrance of Jetlines has the potential to dramatically reduce airfares for Canadians on a long-term, sustainable basis. In just two decades, the ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) model has proven to be highly profitable and successful throughout the world. They generate economic growth but most importantly, they give consumers the freedom to travel more often. While more of these airlines are taking off, Canada has not tapped into the high demand for this kind of travel due to the anti-competitive environment of the existing Canadian duopoly. As a consequence, there is a lack of competition, that drives up prices, making consumers suffer.

Jetlines is a publicly traded company, backed by a management team and board of directors with extensive experience in the low-cost airline industry. Jetlines expect to launch operations before the end of this year. The launch of airline operations is subject to receipt of regulatory approvals and completion of the remaining financing.

The only reason Swoop exists is to put Jetlines (and others) out of business.

And the Jetlines launch delay put a serious kink in that plan. Jetlines was supposed to pushed out of the market by now, not ramping up for an Xmas 2019 start.

Sure, if you consider the past six years of missed launch dates and total changes in structure as "ramping up". I mean, they still need double the cash they have in the bank to even acquire an operating license. Tick-tock...

Small plane crashes off Vancouver Island

Emergency crews are responding to a small island off the northern tip of Vancouver Island where a floatplane has crashed.

Four people dead in B.C. float plane crash

 

Four people are dead in a float plane crash near Port Hardy on Addenbroke Island. It is unclear how many people were on board the Cessna 208, which is capable of carrying 10 to 14 passengers. Crews are on the scene.

It’s a serious enough of a concern to have spawned Swoop. So the Canadian aviation braintrust has to believe there is merit to their plans, and certainly so when both main players in Canada have significantly higher labour costs than Jetlines will have.

I know you're Jetlines' number one fan on this forum, but let's be honest. If Swoop was created to kill off anyone, it was the actual operational low-cost airline NewLeaf/Flair. Jetlines has been unsuccessful at getting a plane in the air for 6 years and counting.

It’s certainly a long term vision.

Recall that in 2016 they fought for and won the right for a Canadian airline to be owned by foreign interests up to 49%. Honestly it was since then that the serious planning began followed up with the airline going public in 2017.

Are they going to fly? Who knows.

Air Canada, which operated YYJ-YEG (Edmonton) as a 2x daily seasonal summer service in 2018 but did not operate the route this summer, has put 2x daily YYJ-YEG back on the schedule beginning May 2020.

July saw yet another drop in passenger volumes, bringing down y-o-y totals by 3.9%.

 

July itself dropped 7.3%, shedding 14,600 passengers compared to 2018 (a staggering 471 individuals per day).

 

To-date over 46,000 fewer passengers have traversed through the gates of YYJ.
