b-17 crash in the usa:

Several fatalities and multiple injuries were reported after a World War II-era bomber crashed Wednesday while attempting to land at Connecticut's largest airport, officials said.

Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Commissioner James Rovella said at a news conference that there were 13 people on board the plane at the time, including 10 passengers and three crew members. Rovella added that one person was also on the ground in a maintenance facility when the plane crashed at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Conn., located north of Hartford.

this site says there are about 10 of them left that still fly:

Several B-17 planes are still airworthy today, including "Memphis Belle", "Sentimental Journey", "Nine O Nine" and "Aluminum Overcast".

"Sentimental Journey" was the one that flew to Victoria last year. I don't know which B-17 crashed today.

here is more on the b-17 crash.

https://www.masslive...identified.html

2 of the survivors were local firefighters that happened to be onboard.  i suppose any flight crash death is very tragic.  but it seems to me these are particularly sad as these people were taking "a flight of a lifetime".

Air Canada is also retiring the DH3s and DH1s and replacing them with existing Q400s, so its possible they are redeploying them to cover routes that were previously served by DH3s.

My Air Canada maintenance connection at YVR says there are no Dash 8-100's in BC and only 5 Dash 8-300's and only 3 are operating right now regularly but they are keeping them around. The Q 400's are pretty much on every route. He mentioned the Q400 are holding up some slack cause of the 73Max fleet not being online.

I'm just still surprised the earliest flight for Air Canada passengers is so late in the morning now, so much for a jump start on the business day via YVR for cross country or international travel .

^100% agree.

The first AC flight is now at 7 and the second at 9. The breaks a lot of connections. What I have had to do on some flights is start splitting itineraries between WJ and AC to get a reasonable trip. As long as I don't miss a connection..

I note from the latest Chemistry report that YYJ traffic is now down 11% YoY.  Perhaps airlines are just scaling back in generally with service to YYJ with (non cruise ship) tourist numbers falling and business slowing down.

August was down 11% but YOY we're 5% down: https://victoria.cit...-flights-nixed/

Which just shows that the slowdown is accelerating.

Air Canada Rouge is operating a 767-300 for this week only in the timetable before going back to the A321, and then back to the 6am departure in late Oct.

Air Canada Express has sure scaled back flights to YYJ, at least 3 flight to YVR removed from last winters schedule. Most notable is the 0525am departure. First flight out is now 0645am.

Do we need to fly on heritage aircraft?

The VAA has posted some pictures to their website. Be nice if there was a video walk thru. One comment I hear often is more food vending machines for those picking up late night arrivals, and with winter weather moving in, some of those late flights can be very late.

In other putter on-line news. . .

As Mike K pointed out, AC flights to YUL, Montreal - are going daily, with A321 service, they shifted their flight times as well. use to be a same crew over night, with a 9pm arrival into YYJ and a 9am hour departure the next morning. Now its' going to be a 0630hrs departure from YYJ and arriving from YUL at 2230hrs.

But both morning and evening AC YYZ,  Toronto flights next summer have been down graded from the A321 to the A319 aircraft doing the same time slots as before. That is a real reduction in seat availability. Maybe it will change closer to summer.

I'm surprised WJ has stretched out their non-stop YYZ flights so far into the fall this year, filling the only early morning non-stop departure. Normally done with that route in early Sept last year. Maybe filling the void till AC returns to their 0630hrs non stop departure from YYJ in just a few weeks.

^ No cell phone?!

Battery dies after about three pictures and I needed it for texting, I'm just too cheap to replace either the battery or the phone.

Anyhoo - the new departure area is bigger...it's newer...some would say it's prettier...but it's still just an airport and so I don't expect much.

Pros: more space, more seating, generally feels more comfortable.  I want to say security has been made more efficient but I honestly don't remember what it was like before.

Cons: not much for services behind the security wall (a Spinnakers lounge, a (coffee place?) and a newsagent; other services still under what looks like long-term construction), no new covered gates (still had to walk outside to/from my flight; at Calgary we got a covered gate each way)

If the numbers drop a bit further after the current terminal expansion then Victoria might finally have an airport facility that jibes with the amount of traffic it handles.

shouldn't the general public be celebrating a 5% reduction in air travel?  shouldn't the goal be to reduce air traffic out of victoria by 50% or so by 2030?

the best way to cut emissions from flight is to have less of them.  why isn't that the goal?  same for cruise ships.

Things aren't as bad in Kelowna...certainly wouldn't say they're down a lot anyways. They're only down 12,094 passengers YTD, which equates to 0.87%, whereas YYJ is down 69,371 passengers YTD, or 5.29%.

True, even with 4 more carriers serving YLW than YYJ.....

Air Canada revised it's timetable for the next 4 months. The non-stop flight is no longer daily. Still Airbus A321 service, just not daily.
