I suppose some airlines can start with a fresh sheet. and instead of legacy guiding them the new plan can make more economic sense.

The actual planes and trained staff will all still be there afterwards.   It may be rather cheap to start up an airline.   The losers will be the owners of the airlines and staff with good collective agreements.

This is the fourth time in 20 years where global events caused serious problems for the air travel industry - 9-11, 2008/09 downturn, Icelandic volcano, and now COVID-19.   I am wondering if in the next year new rules/regulations/laws will be enacted to force airlines to financially prepare for shut downs?   I am thinking of something like the liquidity requirements banks have.   I think it could be reasonable to require airlines to have enough financial resources in trust/reserve to cover a two or three month shut down.

What I do think is going to happen is an end to cheap global air travel.   People travelling on business for a company/government/NGO are going to continuing travelling and not worry about the costs but it is the tourist travel that I think will now permanently changed.

I don't know if this was ever formally noted here, but unsurprisingly, Swoop has pushed back the start date of its Victoria-Winnipeg service from April 27 to June 1 for the time being.

YVR is starting to close off parts of the terminal and expects a 50% drop in total traffic this year. New estimate is 13 million passengers, the same passenger volume as 1995. Last year they had 26 million.

YYC closed the WestJet side of the terminal (A gates).  All flights are operating from the B & C gates, there are WS flights departing from C gates, which were normally AC-exclusive.

The remaining SEA flight has been cancelled by Horizon from April 10th - 30th.

5 flights operating today, only one of them in the morning.

2 to Vancouver (Jazz), 1 to Vancouver (Encore), 1 to Seattle (Horizon), 1 to Calgary (Westjet).

This may be the first time in history that Westjet has more seats operating to YYJ than Air Canada.

The first arrival isn't until after noon (Horizon). Once that flight ends in a few days, if the other airlines keep the the same schedule it won't be until after 4pm.

WestJet is still running their early morning Calgary flight. Arrives from Calgary at 7:50 AM, departs to Calgary at 8:45 AM.

WestJet also has a 11:30 AM arrival from Vancouver on the schedule, but it has been cancelled the last couple of days due to low demand (last it ran was Friday morning).

Here's the current weekday schedule minus Alaska.

Interesting. Wonder why the morning flight isn't showing up on the airport arrival/departure info.

YYJ normally drops flights from their board within a couple of hours of arrival or departure. It's listed there for tomorrow.

Use FlightAware or any similar flight tracker website for a better picture of what's happening at the airport:

Four daily flights to Vancouver, while YVR passenger traffic is down to 4% of normal levels (only 3,000 pax per day!)

Will be interested to see YYJ numbers come out shortly for March.

But this makes you realize just how frequent flights usually run between Victoria and Vancouver.

Harbour Air (19 to Vancouver Harbour, 6 to YVR), Helijet (12), Air Canada (11), WestJet (5), and Pacific Coastal (5) typically run upwards of 58 flights per day between Victoria and Vancouver. Currently there are 7 (2x AC, 2x WestJet, 3x Helijet).

FRANKFURT — German airline group Lufthansa said it was permanently removing some of its large aircraft from service and reducing capacity for the long term, saying it will take years for demand for air travel to return to levels seen before the coronavirus pandemic.
The company said in a statement Tuesday that it was retiring six Airbus A-380s, five Boeing 747-400s and seven Airbus A340-600 aircraft, a step that anticipates less traffic long term at its Frankfurt and Munich hubs in Germany. The company was unable to say what eventually would happen to the planes given lack of demand for aircraft at the moment but it was clear they would not fly for Lufthansa again.

These plans were already in the making. Airlines are no longer hot to trot for four engine aircraft like the 380, 747 and 340, and prefer the much more efficient two engine 777s, Dreamliners and 350s.

The 747 has a change changer when it come into service 50 years ago, Airbus thought the A380 would be the next one but it did not "take off" as expected and production will end at only 250.  Boeing has built 1557 747s though at Boeing was planning on ending production in 2021

so ac will rehire the workers. But they will sit at home. Odd.

A spokesperson for the airline told CBC News that all all furloughed workers who qualify will be put back on payroll but they will not be brought back to active duty status as there is no work for them, given the schedule reductions. But they will have access to their existing benefits packages.
