Among those restrictions are limits on foreign travel — one area where the federal government has clear jurisdiction.

Just how far Ottawa will go in trying to curb travel abroad — with only 10 days to go before Christmas — remains to be seen. The federal government will detail its plan at a 1:30 p.m. ET news conference. CBCNews .ca will carry the remarks live.

With tens of thousands of Canadians planning trips abroad over the coming weeks, any new restrictions could wreak havoc on vacation plans.

'Now is not the time': Federal government warns against travel abroad as Omicron spreads

Ottawa is advising Canadians to avoid non-essential travel outside the country..

Seems they stopped short of implementing any real measures as some speculation suggested they would have (re-introduce 14 day quarantine for all returning travellers, testing for all trips even under 72 hours, etc). Although not that there's a travel advisory will that negate most travel insurance policies?

WestJet has come out strongly against the recent travel advisory issued by the federal government.

“Air travel is the most tested and protected consumer activity in Canada, every person travelling internationally is tested on average twice throughout their travel journey,” said Harry Taylor, WestJet president and CEO.

“As the only fully-vaccinated air travel sector in the world, WestJet is calling on the government to publicly share the travel-related COVID-19 data that has been used to re-impose the advisory and advice targeted towards fully-vaccinated Canadians and the travel and tourism industry.”

Cruise travel is also very safe* - all staff, crew and passengers MUST be vaccinated, yet even before the latest ping-pong restrictions, the feds still had a travel advisory for Canadians who dared dream of getting aboard a cruise ship. There is more at play here than just public safety.

So, are the airlines saying the virus arrives on other continents via stuff in shipping containers that spend months at sea and weeks at ports then days on trains?

Or this. https://www.vancouve...9-tests-4272193

As usual, Canada has extremely tough penalties for getting caught cheating the system. Looks like a solid 3% of those found with fake documentation were punished.

So if there is a 1% chance of getting caught and a 3% chance of being punished if you are caught then those are pretty good odds.

Still by plane, though. Our system of checks and balances isn’t that great if people are sneaking by with fake passports.

As of Aug. 24th.   Nearly 200 travellers to Canada have used suspected fake COVID-19 test results and nine have used suspected fake proof of vaccination, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

I have some trouble with the calculations. So if there is a 1% chance of getting caught and a 3% chance of being punished if you are caught then those are pretty good odds.

Only 9 reported fake vaccine passports/certificates. They would not catch all fake ones for sure.  9 cases out of 200 is 4.5% but investigations are ongoing.  How did you calculate 1% chance of getting caught or is that just an expression of a low chance to get caught.

They are referring to different things. 200 people had fake pcr tests and 9 had fake vaccination certificates.  My 1% was a guess however given the very low number of people caught,

Why don't they just hire some gas station or grocery store employees, they appear to be immune.

Is it time for a "reverse quarantine"?

People without covid, but fearful of it, go into quarantine.

Everyone else goes about their business as usual.

I suggested, jokingly, that in a few weeks we will shift from a proof of vax passport to a proof of positive infection more than 5 days ago passport, so the only people allowed on planes will be those who have been infected and recovered. :)

Of course, someone couldn't take the joke and had to tell me how that was impossible with the current QR code technology.

ETA: if this Omicron proves to be much, much less harmful I can see the return of covid-parties.  I know that if I had to close for five days due to recover, I'd MUCH rather do it right now than at Easter.

Any idea why air traffic control still relies on people speaking over analogue radio to talk to one another about landing and take-off procedures?

Seems to me delivery, police, fire and ambulance dispatch and cabs/Uber all use printed onscreen information. Some automatically generated, but some manually inputted but transmitted more efficiently and instantaneously.

Seems to me the way we are doing it now is pretty antiquated. Inefficient, and maybe more dangerous.

For the same reason that teletype was superceeded by telephone - it's faster to speak than type, especially in a fluid situation like ATC..

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Telephone superseded teletype because they found out how to modulate the radio frequency to carry voice/sound.

If voice was more efficient than typing, we'd all phone in our Amazon and Ticketmaster orders.

Vocie is more efficient than typing, all day long.

The inefficient part with phones is getting someone to answer the damn thing.
