News release:

Victoria Airport Authority (VAA) has been named as one of BC’s Top 100 Employers for 2022.

“We’re pleased to receive this recognition for a third consecutive year,” said Geoff Dickson, Victoria Airport Authority President and CEO. “Being recognized as one of BC’s Top Employers is a direct reflection of the dedication and commitment of the entire VAA team. “When considering the incredible challenges we’ve faced collectively over the past two years and continue to work through, in what we hope, is the final phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, this recognition is a highly valued achievement.”

Some of the reasons, VAA was selected as one BC’s Top Employers include:

· VAA supports employees through various stages of life, from maternity and parental leave top-up for parents-to-be, to flexible work options to help balance personal and family commitments, to retirement planning assistance for those in the later stages of their career.

· VAA encourages employees to put their health first with up to 15 paid sick days annually, and organizes Healthy Workplace initiatives each year, with a variety of activities to promote health behaviours.

· VAA supports a variety of charitable organizations each year and welcomes employee feedback on local and national initiatives to support -- additionally, the organization generously matches charitable donations, to a maximum of $5,000 per employee per year.

Now in its 17th year, BC's Top Employers is a special designation that recognizes the British Columbia employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work. Employers throughout British Columbia were evaluated by the editors at Canada's Top 100 Employers using the same criteria as the national competition: (1) Physical Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial & Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training & Skills Development; and (8) Community Involvement. Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offer the most progressive and forward-thinking programs. The annual competition is open to any employer with its head office in British Columbia; employers of any size may apply, whether private or public sector.

About Victoria Airport Authority

ULCC Lynx will start flying to Victoria from Calgary in May.

It would be nice if we’d get route announcements to other cities than the regular five.

Word on the street, aka a picture shared to me, shows the taxi way extension built and completed in Oct 2019 at the cost of 4.3 million dollars, is open and being used by airplanes needing the full length of the main runway.

Quietly no mention of it anywhere else. I guess NavCan finally is happy with the CCTV set up that has to be built so the section of taxi way could be seen by Tower controllers.

If it did open it must have just been in the last few days. This is a screen grab from a video taken Saturday morning showing the taxiway still closed.

Is there enough/any demand to go anywhere other than 'the regular five'?

Probably not. Although I’m sure frequency to both Vancouver and Seattle could pick up if people were better shown the benefits of starting here.

Nice. I'm sure more than a few folks would be only too happy not to have to make the trek along the Kennedy Lake section of the Pr Alberni to west coast route.

Flair has added YYJ-YOW (Ottawa) for the summer.

Starts weekly May 7th, then 2x per week in July.

I just watched the new Boeing 737 Max doc on Netflix.

I don't know.  If I was Boeing I might be suing Netflix and/or some of the people in that documentary.  There is some real selective editing and some accusations that don't seem properly linked to any of the evidence.

There is no doubt Boeing made serious errors, but the documentary tries to blame it on all corporate greed etc.  I'm not sure they show that very well.

It's clear what Boeing was trying to do, make a plane that could compete with A320 on fuel economy, and the fastest and least expensive way to do that was modify their existing 737, only slightly really.  The system worked well when all component worked as they were designed.  The documentary sort of glosses over the fact that the largest issue was a defective or non-functioning angle-of-attack sensor, and their reliance on only one sensor.

I tend to agree with you concerning the 737 Max.  But considering the many issues Boeing is having with Starliner as well, it may indicate more serious problems in the company.  Possibly the result of what happens when the financial folks manage complex engineering projects, rather than simple greed.

While I can sort of agree, if you slow down and lose market share to Airbus you get yourself in a deeper hole.

The financial folks have to try to keep the entire operation afloat too.

The 737 is a great plane everyone agrees. But now it’s the financial folks at the airlines that want the fuel economy. I can understand the push.

Things went downhill for Boeing when they started outsourcing fabrication to different shops, wings from here, cockpit from there, tail from somewhere.

The great fabrication facility/workers they had has been basically reduced to rivetters and gluers.

The bean counters instead of the engineers made the decisions.

That’s the way it’s done though. You chase after government grants where you can.

And it should be noted this is exactly how Airbus builds, in many different countries.

Some interesting timetable changes for airlines serving YYJ

WestJet has pulled seasonal service to YYZ, Toronto, a regular every summer season sometimes 4 times weekly.

Air Canada is experimenting air craft on the YYC, Calgary route in March, timetable is showing on the 16th an A220 round trip and on the 17th an B737Max

YUL, Montreal is back with AC in June, but only 3 times weekly unlike in the past at 5 times weekly. AC is also keeping mainline service to YYZ vs Rouge service to YUL.
