I wonder if technology can mitigate the need a bit. Can you land planes closer together? Can you push some of the cargo flights to less busy times?

NBC made an attempt at this back 1979.

Is it the wake turbulence that dictates the distances between planes?

I think delayed air mail deliveries would be an issue. You’ve got stuff like seafood and pretty sensitive stuff that is on those air mail flights.

Wake turbulence dictates how close behind and beside you can be to another aircraft. You need more runways a mile apart, something tough to do at Sea-Tac.

Handling more passengers requires bigger terminals and transit between terminals.

I guess cheap competition from Lynx, Swoop(?), and Flair is making an impact on their bottom line.

Including Air Canada.

They cut a whole bunch of routes from Calgary, including Nanaimo, Kamloops, Saskatoon, Regina. All operated by Jazz - so probably a combo of LCC competition and perhaps lack of pilots at Jazz?

^Holiday travelers will be forced to go Miles out of their way and you're jazzed about it? Seems a bit felonious. Maybe you should Take Five for a while.

Problem though is that there is no code sharing arrangements with Flair or Swoop and Calgary is an important hub for YYJ travelers. I wouldn't want to be going on vacation somewhere and having to rely on a Swoop or Flair flights being on time in order for me to make a connection or else lose my flight.

YYC is an important hub for Westjet flights. not so much for AC. You're far more likely to connect in Vancouver. That said, I hope this is temporary.

According to Flyertalk, the Jazz base in closing in YYC. It seems permanent.

Jazz is not owned by Air Canada as an FYI. It is owned by Chorus Aviation.

If you’re flying AC there’s a good chance they’ll connect you via Calgary or YVR.

Checks YYJ to Halifax, fastest route is via Calgary.
