Oh yes, Aryze and their friends' video submissions.  Is it too much to actually ask people to show up at a meeting?

Cap Daily:

Packed agenda makes Victoria council meeting last past midnight

Thursday’s regular council meeting—packed with public hearings—spilled over into Friday. Mayor Lisa Helps adjourned the meeting shortly before 1am, partway through a hearing on a proposed mixed-use development in Vic West.

The hearing will resume Aug. 4, with council viewing 20 pre-submitted videos from members of the public before considering whether a three-and-a-half storey building with two commercial units and approximately 30 residential units can go up at 822 Catherine.

The District of Saanich just made it a whole lot easier to access information on permit and development applications, with the recent launch of its new online Permit and Development Tracker.

The web-based tool allows anyone to view recently submitted permit and development applications, as well as track their progress. It provides the current status of development permits, rezoning, subdivision and board of variance applications.

It’s the same system the CoV uses. This could all be done much better.

Yes. Nice to have the info more easily accessible, though I do wish the actual submitted documents were available.

GMC Projects has acquired 900 Carlton Terrace and 900 Esquimalt Road with plans for future redevelopment.  These buildings are currently home to Spice Valley Indian Cuisine, Bunny's Nook Kitchen, Lum's Chinese, and a few other businesses...

Kapten Kapsell might be the unsung hero of VV. So much accurate info, delivered timely and with no fanfare or hyperbole.

The orchestral flourish that accompanies Mike K.'s new posts has been bugging me for a while now. (As if the flashing 100-point uppercase text wasn't annoying enough.)

That's a bit like saying he's the fishiest fish in the ocean, but I get your point.

Well I appreciate the positive feedback! I have an interest - albeit not a financial one- in new developments around town.

A simple thank you would be nice before you ask for more.

Not yet, to my knowledge, but the GMC projects site lists these addresses as “coming soon”: https://www.gmcproje...future-projects

Saanich approves nine-unit townhouse development with no parking

https://www.timescol...parking-6196560

2859 Richmond is an inspiring collection of car-free 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom homes, centrally located at the junction of Victoria, Oak Bay, and Saanich. It’s the best of urban living and a quiet residential community - from shopping and cafes to beaches and parks. Our revolutionary car-free design changes what we should expect from a home, offering a happier, healthier, more sustainable lifestyle centred on bringing people together and fostering community.

https://www.urbanthr...ca/2859richmond

So these will be for sale. Be interesting to see. It’s not exactly next to a grocery store.

Imaging buying a 3-bedroom townhouse and not owning a car. That would be ultra rare.

The Camosun Community Association noted during the meeting that it would be impossible to enforce a no-parking rule on residents of the project, echoing the sentiments of many who wrote in or showed up at council saying they simply don’t believe residents won’t have vehicles.

West said Urban Thrive has a waitlist of 70 people for the project and their task will be to best match buyers — ideally those living a car-free lifestyle — with the units available.

________

Coun. Colin Plant said nine units is simply not that big. “I’m very much hesitant to believe that approving this project is going to somehow result in the downfall of this community,” he said.

Plant also suggested the project was an example of Saanich trying to find its own “missing middle” housing option between single-family homes and high-rises.

______

“We are appealing to a niche, but it’s not tiny — one in five households in the city of Victoria doesn’t have a car,” he said.

One might say that last statement is a bit weak. What percentage of owned homes are car-less. What percentage of 2+ bedroom owned homes are car-less?

I might suggest every unit here will eventually be a rental and landlords might not much care if tenants use street parking or not.

Bring in a parking permit system with 3-6 hour temporary parking. Grand farther in any car that is owned by some who lives on the street or the next street over, however you want to do it. And any new car needs to get a annual parking permit from the municipality.

Street parking is not too difficult in the area now, no? It can likely absorb 18 more cars. The developer here will do well.

How will you handle cars visiting others in the area? That’s where these parking things fail.

Oh it’s bad. There are suites in this neighbourhood, which guarantees spillover into the street.

On my mom’s block in Vic West, 80% of cars on the street are from tenants of suites. Street parking is 90-100% full every night.
