A redevelopment of the Admiral Inn in James Bay may finally get off the ground after Victoria council approved minor tweaks to a legal agreement on Thursday.

The proposal is to build an eight-storey, 35-unit condo project to replace the existing 34-unit Admiral Inn, which has been on the site for 70 years.

Council voted unanimously to no longer require a clause regarding public realm improvements. When the city passed its works and services bylaw last year, it made the proposed public realm improvements a requirement.

Mayor Marianne Alto, who noted the Admiral Inn project was the first land-use matter she ever considered when she was first elected in 2011, said it was a relief to see the project finally move forward after 15 years.

There are very preliminary plans to build a residential building on the site of the Admiral Inn.

It's a long, narrow L-shaped lot next to the Laurel Point condo/townhouse.

Right now, the existing density is only 1.2:1. There are no plans, concepts, drawings etc. at this point.

Here we are, 18+ years later.

The current admiral inn structure dates to the 1950s? I had no idea.

It hasn’t moved forward just yet.

Know it all.
