That's good to know. Getting updates is important, when owners change, the quality often suffers (I'm looking at you, Ming's).

I've never been disappointed by Halibut House. Tasty, not greasy, ingredients seem high quality.

They are my go-to as well.

I've never tried Halibut House just because it seemed like such an odd name for a Chinese restaurant. Will have to give them a try after reading this thread.

Hong Kong West at Fort and Richmond has always been my go-to place. It's a total dive, but sure is tasty.

Halibut House was a traditional fish & chips joint back in the '80s. I knew the owner after he sold it to Chinese owners who switched up the menu.

What happened to Ming's? Do I want to know or am I just going to have my heart broken?

(Not the owner of, nor am I associated with, the Blue Fox Café, in any way.)

I like the Chinese Buffet on the corner of Tillicum & Harriet

SZECHUAN CITY RESTAURANT & BUFFET.

Even though I had to report them to VIHA last month after getting a long piece of metal Wire in my mouth that came from one of the dishes................I still go because the food is good and the buffet selection is the best I've seen, as far as how many different dishes and items offered for a Chinese Buffet.

I think it's the last Mom & Pop kind of place left in Victoria.

CASH ONLY, they don't take any other form of payment.

The Menu is dirt cheap (like 1980's prices) and it's a simple, down to earth diner that serves a western & Chinese menu.

OK, I will have to check these two places out in my quixotic quest for some real old-fashioned chow mein, not the cheap fried noodle kind. Look, I like tasty authentic Chinese food but sometimes I just crave the classic Canadian-Cantonese variety.

Lol westernized chow mein is old-fashioned in your opinion?  I love that stuff too, but my Cantonese friends/family detest it as it isn't anything like 'real' chow mein.

Yes, like Foo Hong circa 1985.

Frank Leonard: "we used to refer to Foo Hong's on Fisgard as the 'Premier's Office'"

Hansard, March 7, 1974:

MR. L.A. WILLIAMS:Just very briefly, the Second Member for Vancouver-Burrard (Ms. Brown) reminded me that I forgot to advise the committee as to my whereabouts last night. I had dinner with a man who I believe is in the gallery, a member of the press. We went to that distinguished restaurant, well known to the Hon. Premier, Foo Hong's.

HON. MR. DAVE BARRETT: Hear, hear!

MR. L.A. WILLIAMS: The best proof I've got is that I spent the evening with Michael Wong, aged six, who showed me how to write his name in Chinese.

HON. MR. BARRETT: The best thing you've done in weeks.

Rob, HKW is Szechuan but closer to the real thing not just chilies thrown on top of Cantonese. The family is from Yunnan-area SW China. Beware, their standard-level heat is quite fiery so let them know your tolerance.

Red Kettle does a solid western style combo daily. Probably the style of chowmein you're looking for.

My wife's cantonese, and we eat at Wah Lai Yuen and Jade Fountain. I also like Ho Tong, but it can be a little salty and service during busy periods is shaky at best... :P
