HKW has a non English menu too. I advise against ordering the spicy bung hole. Seriously.

I worked with a Taiwanese guy who would bring this stuff to work sometimes. Not even your son in law would eat it! The guy who brought it in loved it tho.

both marble arch & halibut house are great. young's in quadra village is a similar sort of place that I don't think has come up yet in this thread. what is the restaurant formerly known as crystal jade (& uncle willy's & others) like now? I haven't been in since it changed its name.

Does anyone remember a Chinese restaurant on Quadra in the 70's & 80's  across from the ROXY?  I think it was called "The Rice Bowl"   but I could be wrong.

I remember the sign for the restaurant was a bowl of rice with some chop sticks in it.

I live nearby and it always seems empty. Never tried it because of that.

It's only open for Dinner, but it has a strong base of regulars generally from the neighbourhood.

Try it though, it has wicked food. And I believe one of the cooks used to cook at Foo-Hong's in China Town before it closed down several years ago.

Jade Fountain, the Halibut House for sure, and East Garden are all favs in this house. HH in particular seems to be a go-to place for my guy friends whenever we talk shop or just meet up.

Best indicator of good Chinese food is a place that is packed with Chinese folks for lunch and dinner. Jade Fountain and Halibut House are examples of those.

Mind you, that does not include places that cook a westernized chow mein that kicked off this latest topic.

For a good mix of authentic and gweilo dishes, Sun Wah on Cook and Pandora is the best in town.  All of my Chinese friends eat there and recommend it.  Lin Heung in Shelbourne Village Square is a solid second in my books.  For the best Wor Wonton, I like Ocean Garden in Chinatown.  And of course, Don Mee's for dim sum.

I am more surprised that Young's has the wherewithal to have ads on Facebook. They have never struck me as the most cutting edge establishment. Relatively cheap eats mind you and they have managed to survive when many others have not, so I suppose they are doing something right.

They spend their window washing budget on Facebook ads.
