I think it's really cool they're going to bring back angled parking on the side streets to compensate. We need more angled parking!

Hey man, for some dudes all parking is angle parking.

Rapid Transit in Victoria?

According to the Regional Growth Strategy for the Capital Region, we might be facing an increase in population of over 90,000 people over the next 20 years. That’s a lot of people for an area with limited roadways. Thankfully, density along transit routes is fast becoming an accepted planning tool. But what if the transit system is inadequate to our needs? Does the Capital Region really want to be known for traffic jams?

Enter the “Transit Priority Project.”

Mike Davis, Manager, Victoria Regional Transit System for BC Transit will tell us what the thinking is behind the new rapid bus system now being planned along three corridors. The north corridor connects commuters from the Saanich Peninsula, the east corridor connects UVic and Saanich, the west corridor connects Langford and Colwood to Saanich and Victoria. Find out what’s coming and why. What Mike has to say about light rail might surprise you.

If you are a developer or development affiliate, architect, planner, urbanist, housing advocate, or citizen-activist interested in development and transit in our region, you will want to reserve now for this important presentation.

Added Bonus: A Brief Presentation by Our Biggest Sponsor: CMHC

John Lynch, Manager of Business Development for Multi-Unit Mortgage Insurance for the BC Region of CMHC will give us a brief overview of the advantages of working with the CMHC on your multi-unit insurance needs.

excellent. Here's the website for that Prority Feasibility Study mentioned above:
http://www.transitbc...ansit_priority/
Their final report will be finished later this fall.

If the ride time is closer to what it would be in a car (or even faster) I'm positive more people would use it. Something like this will definitely get people to use public transit.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but in the September VTC minutes there is a busway update available here:

http://www.bctransit.com/regions/vic/news/commission/pdf/cmtg-ri-428.pdf

The most interesting aspect is this tidbit:

A transit priority feasibility review of the segment from Saanich Road to Colwood Interchange has been completed including a Multiple Account Evaluation of several options. These options included continuation of the median busway from Saanich Road to Colwood Interchange, curbside HOV/bus lanes, use of shoulder for peak hour bus only operation and improved queue jump facilities. All show positive cost benefits over a ten and twenty year time frame. BC Transit has recommended to the Ministry of Transportation that the median busway be continued through to Tillicum Road and that between Tillicum Road and Colwood Interchange transit priority options be subject to consideration by the Ministry on this segment of the provincial highway network.

This is a great step forward and in fact the suggestion that the busway be contiued to Colwood Interchange is even better because this means that the future LRT corridor would already phyically exist. I always thought the buses intermingling with traffic after Saanich Road was a bad idea. Too bad their has been little public discussion of this aspect. Also if they plan to have a station near the tillicum intersection it should actually be where the highway crosses over Burnside because that is far closer to the mall/ library / rec centre/ movie theatre and park then the intersection.

Yeah I saw that too. It makes sense to continue thru to Tillicum Rd and hopefully to Collwood Interchange. The station location u mentioned also is a good idea. Also there should be talk of what to do with the rapid transit line after the Colwood interchange. Will the Galloping Goose still be used along this segment? I know it will for the future LRT line. Perhaps extending busway along the crawl.

My personal thought is that we should leave the goose alone and just run the LRT down the center of the highway to Colwood exchange and then up though the crawl to the current transit exchange location. Then Right turn to Langford depot.

If they continue it through to Tillicum they might as well continue it through to MacKenzie and then run it up the Goose.

Know it all.

Weird, the original reason to save the goose was for a transit corridor, not just a bike path.

Right turn on what road? Goldstream?

Goldstream is full of driveways and traffic lights which would defeat the purpose of LRT being faster than the car and bus.

Now one could have it continue along sooke rd, then VMP to Langford Exchange or share the goose from Sooke Rd to Westshore town centre.

How would the LRT access the crawl? It would have to share some aspect of the goose thru the colwood interchange.

Just a thought

I was measuring the distance from the hypothetical station to the mall and I realized Google has updated their aerial pics of Victoria. All of the newer buildings are there now.

Here is an aerial map from the CRDs Natural Atlas Website http://www.crd.bc.ca/maps/natural/atlas.htm#.

Busway/Future LRT Alignment Map;

The blue is the approved busway along Douglas St, the red is my alignment suggestion which would follow the TCH median from T&C Mall to the Colwood Interchange then head off on a flyover to the Goose Trail, then under the overpass, follow the crawl (hwy 14) to Colwood Corners then onto Goldstream turning left on Peatt Rd to a new exchange at Peatt Rd, Station Rd and Phipps Rd. The orange represents optional alignments, option #1 continues along hwy 14 to the Goose Trail and follows the trail to Westshore Town Centre, then along Phipps Rd to the new exchange or option #2 continues along hwy 14, then Sooke Rd to VMP to the Westshore Town Centre, etc.

Urban I am with you on the Veterans Memorial turnoff but why on earth would you use the goose when simply running it along the centre of the highway would work just as well if not better? I can't see a single benefit of choosing to either compress the goose or get rid of it. As for Colwood interchange the trains would simply go down beneath the current overpass and follow along Hwy 14

Here is an updated alignment for the Busway/LRT alignment, with a key describing the stations.

Close but not with the detour off the highway rather it would go down between the two overpasses.

I checked that, and it wouldnt work. The bridge supports wont allow room for two bus lanes or two LRT tracks, the angle is too steep. The only other option would be a tunnel.

I have included another aerial photo of a possible tunnel section thru the interchange. Because the TCH is higher than Burnside and Hwy 14, the tunnel would need to be on a grade or deep enough to pass under each. At each end would be a gradual incline of about 1 or 2% going down to meet the tunnel and coming up from it.
