One wonders what the ROI is on, say, the transmountain project?

and site c don't forget!  that's coming along nicely.  "first power" to arrive in late 2023.

if a system costs $13,000 to install, and i am saving $600 a year by getting no Hydro bill AND they cut me a cheque for $150 each year for surplus power they buy back from me...what is my ROI?

I don’t think BC Hydro pays for excess power anymore.

It is not $13,000 divided by $600. You have to factor in the opportunity cost of the $13,000

also that $13,000 system is not free from maintenance/upgrades nor does it last forever.

also in 5 years time a $13,000 system might yield 1.5 or even 2.5 times the power.  now you are a bit obsolete.

with your "hydro bill" system the power just keeps coming and somebody else deals with all the upgrades and technology and maintenance and efficiencies.  they only charge you mostly for what you use which is nice.

i think in a lot of places homeowners might look at ways to just decrease their power draw rather than generating opportunities at home.

I think tommy still has the power buy back from hydro, which they no longer offer.

That solar system won’t be fully functional in ten years, and it is at constant risk of damage. All it’ll take is a branch from a tree during a wind storm to cause damage, or a bird drops an object, or a small roof repair leads to an accidental crack of a panel, etc.

My annual hydro bill is about $780, with wood heat and no gas appliances. Once I convert to gas hot water tanks (I have two) that’ll be a huge energy cost saver.

why do you have two gas water tanks but no gas?  also why would you need two?  isn't that less efficient?  can't you do on-demand water heating with gas?

I had gas hooked up through some finagling, but nothing running on it yet.

I need two tanks because of where they’re located, which prevents a full-size standalone unit.

I’ll see where things are at with on demand once I get there. It might be more economical at that point but right now it’s hard to justify with only two people in the house. For the price of that unit and the hook-up/install I’ve got 25 years of quality hot water tank replacements. A neighbour recently converted to on-demand and it cost him $5k just for the unit, not including install.

I had an on-demand system installed 10 years ago for about $5K all in.

Frankly I wish we never did.

Perhaps they have improved, but ours takes forever to provide hot water - even at a laundry sink 3 feet away from the unit!

All that energy savings from not heating a 50 gallon tank is literally down the drain.

From what I’ve heard they’ve improved quite a bit but you still have to pay a lot for the good ones, like $6 or $7k.

Another route is the solar tubes, but that’s not without its problems. They’re unsightly, also prone to damage from branches/items falling from above and require maintenance despite being self contained units with only one moving part (a small motor to drive the water). My uncle has one and he’s had to re-insulate the water tank, replace the motor twice and, of course, come the winter, the savings are limited as you’re usually using hot water before the sun rises or after it sets.

Insane! I had two electric on-demand units in Thailand, Panasonic brand. About $100 each. They worked great, pretty instantaneous and seriously hot if I wanted. I would order them in and have them properly installed.

for comparison - period jan 1 - aug 15

2018 - 4190 kWh

2019 - 4346 kWh

2020 - 4165 kWh

at peak production each panel is pushing out 271wh * 14 = 3.794 kWh for the system  (rated at @ 4.55 kWh)

same output as the week after install, no reduction in output to date

I like guys who have no argument otherwise disparage it because of author/company etc. Totally lame.

Again, no refuting of facts, just don't like where they came from. Lame.
