You said a $20,000 energy retrofit might bring $50,000 more to the sale price.

I cry foul.

Right. Remember $20,000 will cost you $40,000 if borrowed.

I had priced a PV system out 5 years ago and it wasn't worth it then. The equipment will not last 20 years without maintenance costs too.

That said I would place a lot of value to being able to be energy independent but that means a battery system which will add a lot more. $20K would only get you a grid tie system. So if the power goes out you are still SOL.

If it was an "emergency" like they declared why not print a trillion dollars and outfit us all with a full PV system for free? Call it climate vaccination.

The offshore wind industry has marked a new milestone this week, with the world’s most powerful turbine – a 16MW giant from Goldwind and China Three Gorges – rolling off the production line in east China’s Fujian province.

The milestone achievement was Tweeted by CTG on Wednesday, boasting the turbine’s world-topping per-unit capacity, its 146 metre hub and its impeller diameter of 252 metres, all while being the world’s lightest unit per MW weight.

https://reneweconomy...n-line-at-16mw/

CTG says that, at full wind speed, the turbine can generate 34.2kWh of power after rotating a full turn.

The annual output of just one of the offshore turbines, estimated to average over 66 million kWh, can meet the annual demand of 36,000 households, “save 22K tonnes of standard coal, and reduce 54K tonnes of CO2,” the Tweets said.

So doing some quick math here, one spin of the thing is almost enough power for one house for a day.  2 spins is more than enough.

Switzerland is in trouble. Phasing out nuclear power in favour of green alternatives has resulted in the following, and I’ve highlighted some of the crazier stuff:

The lowest level will see public buildings heated to no more than 20 degrees Celsius, with people asked to limit their washing machines to a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius.

Under the next level, temperatures will be lowered to 19 degrees Celsius and streaming services asked to lower the resolution of videos from HD quality to standard.

If the situation worsens, shops will be asked to close two hours early and electric vehicles limited to essential journeys.

Crisis measures could see hot water disabled in public bathrooms and the use of electric leaf blowers barred.

Next, escalators will be stopped and outdoor Christmas lighting turned off.

Cryptocurrency mining would then be banned if supplies keep dropping, along with swimming pools closed and lights in sports stadiums turned off.

If the most extreme shortages hit, sports matches, concerts and theatre performances will be cancelled, and all leisure businesses forced to close.

^ Meanwhile the rest of Europe is ramping up coal use to offset the drop in electricity from natural gas and nuclear sources.

See, Santa brought them all that coal for a reason.

It’s all fun and games, until you’re cold at Christmas, you’re not allowed to have lights on celebrating the season, and your electric vehicle is itself just an ornament.

You will be allowed to buy a diesel / gas / coal generator to power your electric vehicle.

I think if you look through history, wars have effects energy in many places..  The UK is effected every time something major goes on.  Rationing in energy is not new and not only the Swiss will take some measures.

I think if you look through history you also will see wars being used as an excuse to forward authoritarian policies that stick.

It wasn’t meant to happen. The risk was “small” in October, according to the government via the economics minister.

We also shouldn’t conflate war, with the transition to renewables that took capacity offline for reliable energy and replaced it with unreliable energy.

In any case, now the blame game can begin.

With regard to the energy shortage, Parmelin said that an ordinance was in place for gas. For electricity, experts said that before the end of March next year the risk of a shortage was very small. Ordinances for electricity should exist by the end of November.

Probably for a different thread...  War brings higher energy needs with less availability...  Wars are many things to many people...  A lot of Euro countries will be in trouble, they are net importers or energy, if they can't get it or it's too expensive, there will be constraints...

What are your concerns here..  They will put on extra socks and sweat shirts...  They'll be fine, like they have been for years...  Well Ukraine might not be....  That's a cold country and hit the hardest...  If anything doesn't this highlight the reliance on imported fossil fuels by many of these countries?  Shouldn't countries want to be self sufficient when it comes to energy?

It’s more complicated than that. We are not self-sufficient in rubber or bananas or microchips. We could be, but at what cost? Other countries or regions might feel the same about energy.
